A team moved a block's buffer path from APB to AHB-Lite for bandwidth and measured almost none. Their manager put an address on the bus and waited for the data to move before it put up the next address. Every transfer held the bus from start to finish, as on APB. AHB is faster for one reason: while the data of one transfer moves, the address of the next is already on the wires, as the figure shows.
Each chip shows what its wires carry in the cycle: an address and a different transfer's data at once.
- Cycle 4
The address phase of the write:
HTRANS= NONSEQ,HADDR= 0x1000,HWRITE= 1. The memory samples it at this edge. - Cycle 5
Two things at the same edge. The write's data phase ends:
HWDATAcarries 0x11223344. The read's address phase is accepted:HADDR= 0x1000 withHWRITE= 0. - Cycle 6
The read's data phase ends with
HRDATA= 0x11223344, and the second write's address is accepted in the same cycle. - Cycle 7
The second write's data moves while the last read's address is accepted.
- Cycle 8
The last data phase ends. Four transfers, four consecutive cycles: no cycle carried only an address or only data.
Measured on the bench (cycle k is what edge k sees). HTRANS shows the address phase; HWDATA and HRDATA belong to the transfer whose address was taken one edge earlier.
The parts of an AHB system
An AHB system with one manager needs four kinds of block. The manager starts every transfer. The decoder looks at the address and selects one subordinate. The subordinates do the work. The multiplexor returns the selected subordinate's answer to the manager. There is no arbiter: one manager owns the bus.
| Block | Drives | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Manager | HADDR, HTRANS, HWRITE, HSIZE, HBURST, HPROT, HWDATA | starts each transfer with an address phase, sends write data in the data phase |
| Decoder | HSELx, one per subordinate | selects the subordinate whose address region holds HADDR, during the address phase |
| Subordinate | HREADYOUT, HRESP, HRDATA | samples the address phase, then completes, stretches or fails the data phase |
| Multiplexor | HREADY, HRESP, HRDATA to the manager | forwards the answer of the subordinate whose data phase is in progress; HREADY also goes to every subordinate |
| Default subordinate | HREADYOUT, HRESP | answers addresses that no subordinate owns, so a stray access ends in an ERROR instead of a hang |
The single-manager system of the specification. Lesson P4.8 builds the decoder and the multiplexor.
Two signals carry the bus forward. HTRANS says whether the address phase holds a transfer (NONSEQ or SEQ) or nothing (IDLE, BUSY); lesson P4.3 covers all four. HREADY says the data phase in progress ends at this edge. When it is low, the subordinate is stretching its data phase, and everything on the bus waits.
Two phases, overlapped
Every transfer has an address phase and a data phase. The address phase lasts one cycle unless the transfer before it is still in its data phase. The data phase lasts one cycle, plus one for every wait state the subordinate inserts. The two phases of one transfer never share a cycle. The address phase of the next transfer shares a cycle with the data phase of this one, so a subordinate that never waits moves one transfer per cycle.
Pipelined: queue four, then go()
ahb_write(32'h1000, 2, 32'h11223344);
ahb_read(32'h1000, 2);
ahb_write(32'h1004, 2, 32'h55667788);
ahb_read(32'h1004, 2);
go();
Addresses accepted at edges 4, 5, 6, 7; the last data phase ends at edge 8.
One at a time: go() after each
ahb_write(32'h1008, 2, 32'h99aabbcc); go();
ahb_read(32'h1008, 2); go();
ahb_write(32'h100c, 2, 32'hddeeff00); go();
ahb_read(32'h100c, 2); go();
Addresses at edges 10, 13, 16, 19; the last data phase ends at edge 20.
The second run moves the same data in more than twice as many cycles. Each transfer waits for the one before it to finish. The bus carries only an address or only data in every busy cycle, and the bench adds an idle cycle while the stimulus queues the next transfer. Nothing in the protocol forces this: it is the manager's choice, and the mistake from the opening story.
AHB-Lite, AHB5 and the AHB of AMBA 2
The name AHB covers three generations, and interview questions mix them up.
| Version | Specification | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| AMBA 2 AHB | IHI 0011A (1999) | several bus masters, an arbiter with request and grant signals per master, HRESP of two bits with RETRY and SPLIT so a slow slave could free the bus |
| AHB-Lite | IHI 0033A | one manager, no arbitration, HRESP of one bit: OKAY or ERROR |
| AHB5 | IHI 0033B | AHB-Lite plus Secure transfers (HNONSEC), Exclusive transfers (HEXCL, HMASTER, HEXOKAY), extended memory types, multiple subordinate selects, user signals |
| AHB5, issue C | IHI 0033C (2021) | adds write strobes (HWSTRB), signal width properties, signal validity rules and parity protection |
The current specification, IHI 0033C, uses "AHB" for both AHB-Lite and AHB5. SPLIT and RETRY are gone.
A system with several managers today puts an interconnect between them. Each manager sees its own single-manager AHB-Lite bus, and the interconnect arbitrates and routes. The specification leaves the internals of such an interconnect out of scope, so every P4 lesson uses one manager.
Between APB and AXI
| APB | AHB | AXI | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transfers in flight | one, start to finish | two: one in its address phase, one in its data phase | many, per channel and per ID |
| Cycles per transfer, no waits | at least two (setup, access) | one, when pipelined | one beat per cycle per channel |
| Bursts | none | SINGLE, INCR, WRAP4/8/16, INCR4/8/16 | up to 256 beats with one address |
| Response | PSLVERR with the last cycle | HRESP: one-cycle OKAY or two-cycle ERROR | BRESP per write, RRESP per beat |
| Ordering | trivial: one at a time | trivial: in order, one manager | per ID; reads and writes independent |
| Typical place | peripheral registers behind a bridge | memories and fast peripherals near a small processor | the system interconnect, DMA, caches |
Low-bandwidth peripherals usually sit on APB behind an APB bridge, which is itself an AHB subordinate (lesson P4.8).
AHB has no IDs, no separate read and write channels and no outstanding transactions beyond its pipeline. A slow subordinate holds the whole bus while it stretches its data phase. AXI exists because of that limit; AHB survives because it is simple and fast enough where one manager talks to memories and peripherals.
Asked in interviews: AHB in one picture
What makes AHB pipelined?
The address phase of the next transfer happens in the same cycle as the data phase of the current one. With zero wait states the bus completes one transfer per cycle, although each transfer takes two cycles from address to data.
What is the difference between AHB and AHB-Lite?
AMBA 2 AHB supports several masters with an arbiter and the RETRY and SPLIT responses. AHB-Lite has one manager, no arbitration and a one-bit HRESP (OKAY or ERROR). The current AHB specification describes AHB-Lite and its AHB5 extensions; several managers need an interconnect in front.
Who drives HREADY?
Each subordinate drives HREADYOUT. The multiplexor forwards the HREADYOUT of the subordinate whose data phase is in progress as HREADY, to the manager and to every subordinate.
How many transfers can be in flight on AHB?
Two at most: one in its address phase and one in its data phase. AXI can have many outstanding transactions; AHB cannot.
Try it
The first block issues four transfers as one pipeline: an address phase is accepted at every edge from 4 to 7, and each data phase ends one edge after its address. The second block issues the same kinds of transfer one at a time, so every address phase waits for the previous data phase to end, plus the cycle the stimulus needs to queue the next transfer.
Add mem.waits = 1; as the first line and run again. Each data phase now lasts two cycles, and the address behind it waits with it: the pipeline slows down but never loses its overlap.

Remember
- A single-manager AHB system is a manager, a decoder, subordinates, a read multiplexor and a default subordinate; there is no arbiter.
- Every transfer has an address phase and a data phase in different cycles; the next address phase overlaps the current data phase.
- Each subordinate drives HREADYOUT; the multiplexor makes it HREADY for the manager and every subordinate, and a low HREADY stalls both phases.
- AHB-Lite has one manager and HRESP of OKAY or ERROR; AHB5 adds Secure, Exclusive and other features; SPLIT and RETRY belong to AMBA 2.
- AHB keeps at most two transfers in flight; AXI exists for the many outstanding transactions AHB cannot hold.
