Address phase, data phase
Say what moves in each phase of an AHB transfer, when the write data and the read data are valid, and why every subordinate needs HREADY as an input.

A memory controller was moved onto AHB from a bus that sent the write data together with its address. On AHB it stored every word one transfer late: the first write left zeros, and each later write stored the data of the write before it. The controller read HWDATA in the cycle it saw the address, but on AHB the write data comes one cycle later, in the data phase. The figure shows both phases, and what a wait state does to them.
A token on HADDR marks an address phase accepted at that edge.
- Cycle 4
The write's address phase is accepted: 0x1000,
HWRITE= 1. Its data is not on the bus yet. - Cycle 5
The write's data phase ends with
HWDATA= 0x11223344. In the same cycle the read's address phase is accepted. - Cycle 6
HREADYis low: the read's data phase is stretched. The next write's address, 0x1004, is on the wires but not accepted, and it must stay there. - Cycle 7
HREADYis high. The read ends withHRDATA= 0x11223344, and the address 0x1004 is accepted at this edge. - Cycle 8
The second write's data, 0x55667788, moves one cycle after its address, as always.
Measured on the bench (cycle k is what edge k sees). The wait stretched the read's data phase and the following address phase together.
The address phase
The address phase carries everything a subordinate needs to decide what to do: HADDR, HTRANS, HWRITE, HSIZE, HBURST, HPROT and HMASTLOCK, and in AHB5 the Secure and Exclusive signals. It lasts one cycle. A subordinate cannot extend it, so every subordinate must be able to sample an address in a single cycle.
An address phase lasts longer only when the transfer before it is still in its data phase. Then the address stays on the wires, unchanged except for the cases lesson P4.4 lists, until HREADY rises. The subordinate takes an address phase at an edge where three things hold: its HSELx is 1, HTRANS is NONSEQ or SEQ, and HREADY is 1.
| At the edge | HSELx | HTRANS | HREADY | The subordinate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| a transfer for it | 1 | NONSEQ or SEQ | 1 | registers the address phase; its data phase starts |
| not yet | 1 | NONSEQ or SEQ | 0 | ignores it: another data phase is still running |
| no transfer | 1 | IDLE or BUSY | 1 | ignores it and answers OKAY with no wait (lesson P4.3) |
| someone else's | 0 | any | any | ignores it |
The sampling rule of an AHB subordinate. Only the first row starts a data phase.
The data phase
Write data appears on HWDATA in the data phase, the cycle after its address was accepted. The manager holds it stable for as long as the subordinate stretches the phase, and the subordinate takes it at the edge where HREADY is 1. Read data is driven by the subordinate onto HRDATA, and it only has to be valid in the last cycle of the data phase. Whatever HRDATA shows while HREADY is low means nothing.
HWDATA taken in the data phase
ahb_write(32'h1000, 2, 32'h11111111);
ahb_write(32'h1004, 2, 32'h22222222);
ahb_read(32'h1000, 2);
ahb_read(32'h1004, 2);
go();
Reads return 0x11111111 and 0x22222222.
mem.wdata_in_addr = 1: taken in the address phase
mem.wdata_in_addr = 1;
// the same four transfers
// e7 D read addr=0x1000 data=0x0 OKAY
// e8 D read addr=0x1004 data=0x11111111 OKAY
Every word is one write late; the checker reports nothing.
The twin is silent on the wires. The manager drove every signal correctly, and only the subordinate looked at the wrong cycle. Only a data check finds it: a read-back, or a scoreboard that compares the memory with what was written.
HREADYOUT and HREADY
Every subordinate has an output, HREADYOUT, and an input, HREADY. It drives HREADYOUT low to stretch its own data phase. The multiplexor picks the HREADYOUT of the subordinate whose data phase is in progress and sends it as HREADY to the manager and to every subordinate. With one subordinate the two are the same wire, which is why the bug below hides on simple benches.
A subordinate must look at HREADY, not its own HREADYOUT, before it takes an address phase. If another subordinate is stretching its data phase, the address on the wires has not been accepted yet. The bench fabric shows the twin: memory m0 (below 0x1000) waits two cycles on a write, while the next write, to m1 at 0x1100, waits on the wires.
fab.m0.waits = 2; fab.m1.ignore_hready = 1; fab.m1.trace = 1;
ahb_write(32'h0100, 2, 32'ha0a0a0a0); // to m0, two wait states
ahb_write(32'h1100, 2, 32'h1b1b1b1b); // to m1, waits on the wires
// mem e5: NONSEQ write 0x1100 size 2 (taken while HREADY is low)
// mem e7: byte 0x1100 <= a0 (lane 0) ... lanes 1 to 3 the same
// e7 D write addr=0x100 data=0xa0a0a0a0 OKAY
// mem e8: byte 0x1100 <= 1b (lane 0) ... lanes 1 to 3 the sameHere the right data overwrites the wrong data one edge later, and a read-back looks fine. A FIFO or a doorbell register would have taken a push or a kick that nobody sent. If the manager cancels the transfer instead, as it may after an ERROR (lesson P4.5), the wrong write is never repaired.
Reset
HRESETn is the only active-low signal of the protocol. It may be asserted asynchronously and is released synchronously, after a rising edge of HCLK. During reset the manager drives HTRANS = IDLE with valid address and control, and every subordinate drives HREADYOUT high, so the first transfer after reset finds the bus ready.
Asked in interviews: the two phases
When is HWDATA valid relative to HADDR?
One cycle later: in the data phase of the transfer, which starts at the edge where its address phase is accepted. The manager holds HWDATA stable through every wait state.
When must HRDATA be valid?
Only in the last cycle of the data phase, at the edge where HREADY is high. During wait states its value is meaningless.
Why does a subordinate need HREADY as an input?
Because another subordinate may be stretching its data phase. The address on the wires is accepted only at an edge where HREADY is high, so a subordinate samples HSELx, the address and the control only then.
Can a subordinate extend the address phase?
No. It can only stretch its own data phase with HREADYOUT low. The next address phase waits on the wires as a side effect.
What happens on the bus during reset?
HTRANS is IDLE and every subordinate drives HREADYOUT high. Reset is asserted asynchronously and released synchronously.
Try it
Each data phase ends one edge after its address phase, except the read of 0x1000: its one wait state moves its end from edge 6 to edge 7, and the address of the next write waits on the wires for the same edge. Everything after it shifts by one cycle.
Add mem.wdata_in_addr = 1; as the first line and run again. The log looks just as healthy, and the checker reports nothing, but the dump shows each word stored one write late.

Remember
- The address phase carries address and control for one cycle; only a stretched data phase before it keeps it on the wires longer.
- Write data is on HWDATA in the data phase, one cycle after its address, and is held through every wait state.
- Read data must be valid only in the last cycle of the data phase, at the edge where HREADY is high.
- Each subordinate drives HREADYOUT; the multiplexor returns HREADY to everyone, and a subordinate takes an address phase only when HSELx, NONSEQ or SEQ, and HREADY all hold.
- In reset HTRANS is IDLE and every HREADYOUT is high; reset is asserted asynchronously and released synchronously.
