Wait states and what may change
A subordinate stretches a transfer by holding HREADYOUT low, and the whole pipeline holds with it. Learn what the manager must keep still, the few changes the protocol allows, and why a moved address writes the wrong word.

A DMA engine wrote two words to a flash controller, the second at 0x1010. When the controller stretched the first write by two cycles, the engine moved its next address on by one word, assuming an address is taken the cycle it first appears. The controller took the address at the edge where HREADY rose, by then 0x1014, so the word landed one word too high under an OKAY response. This lesson is the rule the engine broke and its few exceptions.
One HREADY holds both phases
Each subordinate drives HREADYOUT for its own data phase. The multiplexor routes the one from the subordinate whose data phase is in progress to HREADY, which the manager and every subordinate read. While HREADY is low two things wait at once. The data phase of transfer A is extended. The address phase of transfer B, already on the wires behind it, is extended too, because an address phase is accepted only at an edge where HREADY is 1.
For a write the manager keeps HWDATA stable through the extended cycles. For a read the subordinate needs valid HRDATA only in the cycle that ends the transfer. Step through the example: the memory inserts two wait states into the first write.
xfer is HTRANS[1], 1 for NONSEQ or SEQ.A token flies when an address phase is accepted: a transfer on HTRANS and HREADY high.
- Cycle 1
A's address phase, 0x1000, is accepted: NONSEQ and
HREADYhigh. - Cycle 2
A's data phase starts with 11 on
HWDATA, and B's address 0x1010 is already on the wires. The memory drivesHREADYOUTlow: nothing is accepted at this edge. - Cycle 3
Still waiting. The manager holds both the data of A and the address of B exactly as they were.
- Cycle 4
HREADYis high: A's data is written and B's address is accepted at the same edge. - Cycle 5
B's data, 22, moves while the read of 0x1000 is in its address phase. No waits this time.
- Cycle 6
The read's data phase ends with 11 on
HRDATA, the word A wrote.
A wait state costs every transfer in the pipeline a cycle, not only the slow one.
What the manager must hold, and the exceptions
While HREADY is low the manager must not change the transfer type or the address in the address phase, with the exceptions in the table. The checker on this bench also holds HWRITE, HSIZE, HBURST, HPROT and HMASTLOCK with the address, the conservative reading.
| Signal | During a wait state | Allowed change |
|---|---|---|
HTRANS | held | IDLE to NONSEQ, then held until HREADY is high |
HTRANS in a fixed burst | held | BUSY to SEQ, then held |
HTRANS in an INCR burst | held | BUSY to anything: SEQ continues, IDLE or NONSEQ ends the burst |
HADDR | held | may change while the address phase shows IDLE, and after an ERROR starts |
HWDATA | held for the write in its data phase | none |
IHI 0033C 3.7. An IDLE carries no transfer, so nothing depends on it yet; a NONSEQ, once shown, stays until it is taken, unless an ERROR lets the manager cancel it (P4.5).
The first exception, measured by driving the bus by hand. A waits two cycles, the manager first shows IDLE, then decides on B and shows NONSEQ while A is still waiting:
bus(NONSEQ, 32'h1000, 0); // A's address phase
bus(IDLE, 32'h1100); // A waits: an IDLE in the address phase
bus(NONSEQ, 32'h1010); // still waiting: IDLE becomes NONSEQ (allowed)
bus(NONSEQ, 32'h1010); // HREADY high: A ends, B is accepted
checker: 2 transfers, 2 wait edges, 0 errors, 0 rules broken
bus(NONSEQ, 32'h1000, 0);
bus(NONSEQ, 32'h1010); // B shown during the wait
bus(IDLE, 32'h1010); // ...and withdrawn
bus(NONSEQ, 32'h1010);
RULE trans_change broken at edge 5: NONSEQ changed to IDLE during a wait stateThe broken twin: an address that moved
Set move_in_wait = 1; in the example and the driver moves B's address on by one transfer size during the wait, as the DMA engine did. A subordinate samples the address and control only at an edge where HREADY is 1, so the memory takes whatever is on the wires then:
e4 A NONSEQ WRITE addr=0x1000 size=2 SINGLE
RULE hold broken at edge 6: HADDR changed from 0x1010 to 0x1014 during a wait state
e7 D write addr=0x1000 data=0x11 OKAY
e7 A NONSEQ WRITE addr=0x1014 size=2 SINGLE
e8 D write addr=0x1014 data=0x22 OKAY
0x01010 00 00 00 00 22 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00One slow subordinate stalls the bus
Because HREADY reaches everyone, a wait state stalls the whole AHB interface: no other transfer can be accepted until the waiting one ends. The specification therefore expects every subordinate to have a known maximum number of wait states, so the worst-case latency of the bus can be computed. IDLE transfers are never stretched: a subordinate answers them with a zero-wait OKAY, which the quiz measures.
AXI behaves differently. Its five channels each have their own handshake, so a slow write response does not stop a read address. That independence is what AHB trades for its single, simple pipeline.
Asked in interviews: AHB wait states
What is the difference between HREADY and HREADYOUT?
HREADYOUT is a subordinate's output for its own data phase. HREADY is the bus signal the multiplexor makes from the HREADYOUT of the subordinate whose data phase is in progress; the manager and every subordinate take it as an input.
What does a wait state extend?
The data phase of the current transfer and the address phase of the next one, which is already on the bus. Nothing is accepted until HREADY is high.
May the manager change the address during a wait state?
Only while the address phase shows IDLE, and after an ERROR has started. A NONSEQ or SEQ, once shown, keeps its address until HREADY is high.
May HTRANS change during a wait state?
IDLE to NONSEQ; BUSY to SEQ in a fixed-length burst; BUSY to anything in an undefined-length INCR burst. After such a change HTRANS is held until HREADY is high.
Why does a subordinate sample the address only when HREADY is high?
Because only then is the address phase accepted. While HREADY is low the manager may still change an IDLE into a different transfer, and the transfer it shows may target another subordinate.
Try it
A's address is accepted at edge 4, but its data phase ends only at edge 7: two wait edges. B's address phase is accepted at that same edge 7, three edges after it first appeared. From there the pipeline runs without a gap: B's data and the read's address at edge 8, the read's data at edge 9.
Add move_in_wait = 1; to see the broken twin: the checker names hold and 22 lands at 0x1014. Add watch = 1; to print the bus at every edge, or change waits_at[0] and count the edges each transfer moves.

Remember
- HREADYOUT is a subordinate's output; HREADY is the routed bus signal that the manager and every subordinate read.
- HREADY low extends the data phase of the current transfer and the address phase of the next one at the same time.
- While HREADY is low the manager holds HTRANS and HADDR, except IDLE to NONSEQ, BUSY to SEQ or (in INCR) to anything, and address changes for IDLE or after an ERROR.
- A subordinate samples the address phase only at an edge where HREADY is 1, so a moved address is taken as moved.
- IDLE and BUSY get a zero-wait OKAY; one slow subordinate stalls the whole bus, so each should have a known maximum of wait states.
