Transfer size, byte lanes, strobes and width
Work out which byte lanes a byte, halfword or word transfer uses on an AHB bus, why it must be aligned, what HWSTRB can and cannot change, and what a wider bus does to the lanes.

A driver wrote one status byte at 0x401 and three bytes of the configuration word beside it turned to zero. The subordinate took HWDATA as a whole word on every write, whatever HSIZE said. Every handshake was legal and the checker stayed silent: only the memory shows the damage.
Lane 0, the lowest address of a word, is on the left.
- Cycle 0
The address phase: a byte (HSIZE 0) at 0x401. The lane follows from the address: 0x401 is lane 1 of the word at 0x400.
- Cycle 1
The data phase. The manager drives 11 in lane 1 and leaves the other lanes at 00. HWSTRB 0010 agrees. One cell of the upper grid lights.
- Cycle 2
This memory wrote all four lanes: 0x400, 0x402 and 0x403 now hold the 00 the manager never meant as data.
Measured with the ignore_size twin: the row reads 00 11 00 00 afterwards, where 80 11 82 83 belonged; no rule fired.
The address picks the lanes
HSIZE gives the number of bytes; the low bits of HADDR give the first lane. On a little-endian 32-bit bus a byte at address a travels in lane a mod 4, a halfword in the two lanes from there, a word in all four. The manager only has to drive the active lanes, and the subordinate takes its bytes from those lanes alone. A read works the same way in reverse: the subordinate must drive the active lanes, and the manager picks them out.
| Transfer | Address | Lanes | HWDATA bits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Byte | 0x401 | 1 | 15:8 |
| Halfword | 0x406 | 2 and 3 | 31:16 |
| Word | 0x408 | 0 to 3 | 31:0 |
| Byte (read) | 0x402 | 2 | HRDATA 23:16 |
The four transfers of the example on a 32-bit bus.
A lit cell is a byte written. HADDR leads HWDATA by one cycle: the pipeline of P4.2.
- Cycle 0
The byte at 0x401 is in its address phase. No data yet.
- Cycle 1
Its data phase: 11 in lane 1, strobe 0010, one cell. Meanwhile HADDR already carries the halfword at 0x406.
- Cycle 2
The halfword lands: 3322 in bits 31:16, lanes 2 and 3 of the word at 0x404.
- Cycle 3
The word at 0x408 fills a whole row. The read of 0x402 is in its address phase.
- Cycle 4
The read ends: HRDATA is the whole word 83821180 and the manager keeps lane 2, the byte 82.
Measured: 80 11 82 83 84 85 22 33 44 55 66 77 at 0x400 afterwards, and the byte read returns 82.
Every transfer is aligned
AHB has no unaligned transfers. A halfword must sit on an even address and a word on a multiple of four, in every beat of every burst. AXI lets a burst start at any byte and makes the first beat partial (P2.8); AHB never does. Four bytes from 0x1003 therefore take three transfers: a byte, a halfword and a byte.
A word at 0x1003
unaligned = 1; // let the driver issue it
ahb_write(32'h1003, 2, 32'h44332211);
go();
// RULE align broken at edge 4: a 4-byte transfer
// at 0x1003 is not aligned to its size
Illegal on AHB. The checker names align, and the library refuses it unless told otherwise.
The same four bytes, aligned
ahb_write(32'h1003, 0, 8'h11); // byte
ahb_write(32'h1004, 1, 16'h3322); // halfword
ahb_write(32'h1006, 0, 8'h44); // byte
go();
// 0x01000 a0 a1 a2 11 22 33 44 a7
Three legal transfers move the bytes, and the neighbours keep their values.
HSIZE also has a ceiling: it may not be wider than the data bus. A doubleword on a 32-bit bus breaks size_bus.
HWSTRB: sparse writes, and nothing more
AHB5 adds an optional write strobe per byte lane. HWSTRB is a data-phase signal like HWDATA. A strobe may be low on an active lane, which makes a sparse write; all strobes low is legal and writes nothing. A strobe on an inactive lane means nothing: HSIZE and HADDR still decide which lanes a transfer owns. Strobes may change from beat to beat, and the specification recommends them low on reads.
strb_force = 1; strb_val = 8'b0101;
ahb_write(32'h500, 2, 32'hddccbbaa); // sparse word: lanes 0 and 2
strb_val = 8'b1111;
ahb_write(32'h505, 0, 8'h11); // a byte, every strobe high
strb_val = 8'b0000;
ahb_write(32'h506, 1, 16'h3322); // a halfword, no strobe
go();
// 0x00500 aa 81 cc 83 84 11 86 87A subordinate without an HWSTRB input writes every active lane. Connected to a manager that has one, its missing input is tied high, and it simply cannot do sparse writes.
Endianness and wider buses
The lanes above are little-endian. A byte-invariant big-endian system puts every byte on the same lane for the same address. Only the order of bytes inside a larger value flips: the most significant byte sits at the lowest address. A word-invariant big-endian system moves even a single byte: on a 32-bit bus the byte at offset b travels in lane 3 − b. AHB5 declares which form an interface uses with its Endian property.
| Byte at 0x401 | Little-endian | Byte-invariant BE | Word-invariant BE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lane on a 32-bit bus | 1 | 1 | 2 |
From the lane equations of the specification, section 6.2.
On a 64-bit bus the lane is the address mod 8. The bench at dataW 64 puts a word at 0x1004 in lanes 4 to 7 and a byte at 0x100a in lane 2; the dump reads 80 81 82 83 11 22 33 44 then 88 89 55 8b. A 32-bit subordinate can sit on a 64-bit bus with a little glue. It answers on both halves or only on the addressed half, and it may answer ERROR to a transfer wider than itself.
In the field
Narrow transfers are everyday traffic on AHB: microcontrollers write peripheral registers a byte at a time.
Asked in interviews: transfer size and lanes
Which lanes carry a halfword at 0x1006 on a 32-bit bus?
Lanes 2 and 3, HWDATA bits 31:16. The lane is the address modulo the bus width in bytes.
Can an AHB burst start at an unaligned address?
No. Every transfer, in every beat, is aligned to HSIZE. Unaligned data becomes several smaller aligned transfers.
What does HWSTRB add?
Sparse writes in AHB5: a low strobe keeps an active lane from being written. It cannot widen a transfer; HSIZE and HADDR still choose the lanes.
Must a manager drive the unused lanes of HWDATA?
No. Only the active lanes carry data. The subordinate must take its bytes from those lanes and leave the rest of the word alone.
What is byte invariance?
A byte at a given address uses the same data wires in little-endian and byte-invariant big-endian systems; only multi-byte values change byte order.
Try it
The A lines are address phases and the D lines data phases, one edge apart, as in P4.2. The dump shows exactly the six bytes the three writes owned and nothing else; the read hands back one byte, 82, out of the word on HRDATA.
Set mem.ignore_size = 1; before the writes to reproduce the opening failure. Try ahb_write(32'h403, 1, 16'h1): the library refuses it, because a halfword at an odd address is not an AHB transfer.

Remember
- HSIZE gives the bytes and HADDR the first lane: on a little-endian bus a transfer uses the lanes from address mod bus-bytes upwards.
- Every AHB transfer is aligned to its size, in every beat. Unaligned data becomes several smaller aligned transfers.
- The subordinate writes only the active lanes; a subordinate that writes the whole word corrupts the neighbours without breaking any wire rule.
- HWSTRB (AHB5) makes sparse writes; a strobe on an inactive lane means nothing, and all strobes low writes nothing.
- HSIZE never exceeds the bus width. On a wider bus the lane is the address modulo the wider width.
