Decoder, multiplexor and the default subordinate
Follow one AHB bus through its decoder, its read multiplexor and its default subordinate, see why the multiplexor must follow the data phase, and watch a bridge to APB stretch the bus.

A team added a second memory to an AHB bus and every read started returning the value of the read before it. Their multiplexor chose HRDATA with the decoder's select, the one that names the subordinate in the address phase. On a pipelined bus that is the next transfer's subordinate, not the one answering now.
data_sel is the subordinate in the data phase: the one the multiplexor should listen to.
- Cycle 0
The read of 0x0100 is in its address phase. The decoder selects m0.
- Cycle 1
Its data phase ends here, and m0 is answering. But the address phase now names 0x1100, so the broken multiplexor passes m1's HRDATA: 00000000.
- Cycle 2
The read of 0x1100 ends. The address phase names m0 again, and the multiplexor hands over m0's word, 0a0a0a0a.
- Cycle 3
The second read of 0x0100 gets m1's 1b1b1b1b. Every read so far has the data of the one before it.
- Cycle 4
Only the last read comes back right, because no new address phase follows it.
Measured with the mux_addr_phase twin: rd = 00000000 0a0a0a0a 1b1b1b1b 1b1b1b1b; the reads should return 0a0a0a0a 1b1b1b1b 0a0a0a0a 1b1b1b1b. No wire rule fired.
Three parts around one manager
An AHB-Lite bus has one manager and a little logic. The decoder turns HADDR into one select, HSELx, per subordinate, in the address phase. The multiplexor brings HRDATA, HRESP and HREADYOUT back from the subordinate whose data phase is running; its HREADYOUT becomes HREADY, which goes to the manager and to every subordinate. The default subordinate answers the addresses nobody owns.
| Region | Subordinate | What answers |
|---|---|---|
| 0x0000 to 0x0fff | m0 | a 4 KB memory |
| 0x1000 to 0x1fff | m1 | a 4 KB memory |
| 0x2000 to 0x23ff | the APB bridge | the P3 completer behind it |
| anything else | the default subordinate | OKAY to IDLE and BUSY, ERROR to transfers |
The bench fabric. Every region starts and ends on a 1 KB line, the smallest region AHB allows.
A subordinate must take HSELx, the address and the control only at an edge where HREADY is 1. Before that, the transfer in front may still be stretching, and the manager may still change or cancel the one on the wires (P4.2 shows the subordinate that forgot).
Regions are 1 KB aligned for the same reason incrementing bursts may not cross a 1 KB line (P4.6): a burst must stay inside one subordinate. Force an INCR4 across 0x1000 and its first two beats land in m0, the last two in m1, and the checker names kb1.
The multiplexor follows the data phase
The fix for the opening bug is one register. The multiplexor keeps its own select, loaded from the decoder at every edge where HREADY is 1: the edge where an address phase is accepted and becomes the data phase. Until the next such edge it listens to that subordinate, however many wait states it takes.
HSELx lights in the address phase; data_sel names the subordinate the multiplexor listens to.
- Cycle 0
The read of 0x0100 enters its address phase; HSEL0 is 1. data_sel still names m1, which answered the last write; no read is ending.
- Cycle 1
HREADY was 1 at the last edge, so data_sel now names m0. Its data phase ends with 0a0a0a0a while HSEL1 already selects the next read.
- Cycle 2
data_sel moves to m1 and its data, 1b1b1b1b, comes back. The decoder now points at 0x3000, a hole: HSELD.
- Cycle 3
The default subordinate answers a NONSEQ with ERROR: HRESP 1, HREADY 0, the first cycle. The manager withdraws the read of 0x0100 that is already on the wires.
- Cycle 4
The second ERROR cycle: HREADY 1, HRESP still 1. HTRANS is IDLE, the cancelled read is gone.
- Cycle 5
The manager issues the read of 0x0100 again.
- Cycle 6
It ends with 0a0a0a0a from m0.
Measured: rd = 0a0a0a0a 1b1b1b1b 00000000 0a0a0a0a, with ERROR for the hole and no rule broken.
Select loaded at every edge
fab.m0.waits = 2; fab.mux_no_hready = 1;
ahb_read(32'h0100, 2); ahb_read(32'h1100, 2); go();
// e8 A NONSEQ READ addr=0x100 size=2 SINGLE
// e10 D read addr=0x100 data=0x0 OKAY
// e11 D read addr=0x1100 data=0x1b1b1b1b OKAY
During m0's wait the select jumps to m1, whose HREADYOUT is 1: the read ends a cycle early with m1's data.
Select loaded when HREADY is 1
fab.m0.waits = 2;
ahb_read(32'h0100, 2); ahb_read(32'h1100, 2); go();
// e8 A NONSEQ READ addr=0x100 size=2 SINGLE
// e11 D read addr=0x100 data=0xa0a0a0a OKAY
// e12 D read addr=0x1100 data=0x1b1b1b1b OKAY
The select holds through both wait states; each read ends when its own subordinate is ready.
The default subordinate
If the map has holes, a default subordinate must cover them. It answers IDLE and BUSY with a zero-wait OKAY, like any subordinate, and a NONSEQ or SEQ with the two-cycle ERROR of P4.5. Without it, a stray address would leave HREADY with nobody to drive it, and the bus would hang.
One subordinate may also own several HSELx lines, one per region, when its data path and its registers live at different addresses.
A bridge is one more subordinate
The AHB-to-APB bridge sits in the map like a memory. When it takes an address phase it runs an APB transfer, setup then access, and holds HREADYOUT low until PREADY comes back. PSLVERR becomes the two-cycle ERROR on HRESP.
The APB side runs inside one AHB data phase.
- Cycle 0
The read of 0x2110 is accepted: the bridge owns 0x2000 to 0x23ff.
- Cycle 1
APB setup: PSEL 1, PENABLE 0. The bridge holds HREADY low, so the read of m0 waits in its address phase.
- Cycle 2
APB access with PREADY 1: the word 41504234 goes straight out on HRDATA and HREADY rises. Both phases advance.
- Cycle 3
m0 answers its read with no wait: 0a0a0a0a.
Measured: one wait state for an APB transfer with no APB wait; with fab.p0.waits = 2 the same read takes three.
In the field
Most fabrics are generated from an address map. When one is written by hand, the multiplexor's timing and the default subordinate deserve the first review.
Asked in interviews: decoder and multiplexor
Which select drives the read data multiplexor?
The select of the data phase: the decoder output registered at every edge where HREADY is 1. The decoder's own output already names the next transfer's subordinate.
Why does a subordinate need HREADY as an input?
HREADY says the transfer in front has finished. A subordinate takes an address phase only when HSEL and HREADY are both 1; before that the address may still change or be cancelled.
What does the default subordinate do?
It covers the holes in the map: a zero-wait OKAY to IDLE and BUSY, the two-cycle ERROR to NONSEQ and SEQ.
What is the smallest AHB region?
1 KB, starting and ending on a 1 KB line, which is why an incrementing burst may not cross one: it would change subordinates mid-burst.
How does an APB peripheral answer an AHB manager?
Through a bridge that is an AHB subordinate. It stretches its data phase over the APB setup and access cycles and maps PSLVERR to ERROR.
Try it
The fab lines are the decoder at work: one per accepted address phase, naming the subordinate. Each D line ends a data phase the multiplexor routed from the subordinate the fab line named one transfer earlier.
The hole costs two cycles and a retry: the default subordinate's ERROR makes the manager withdraw the read behind it and issue it again. Set fab.mux_addr_phase = 1; before go() to see each read return its neighbour's data, and fab.m0.waits = 2; to watch the select hold through wait states.

Remember
- The decoder makes HSELx from HADDR in the address phase; a subordinate takes it only when HREADY is 1.
- The read multiplexor follows the data phase: its select is the decoder output registered at every edge where HREADY is 1.
- HREADY is the data-phase subordinate's HREADYOUT, fanned out to the manager and every subordinate.
- A default subordinate covers the holes: zero-wait OKAY to IDLE and BUSY, two-cycle ERROR to NONSEQ and SEQ.
- Regions are at least 1 KB on 1 KB lines; an APB bridge is one more subordinate that stretches its data phase.
