The two-cycle ERROR
An AHB subordinate needs two cycles to say ERROR, while OKAY takes one. See why the pipeline needs the second cycle and how the manager cancels the transfer already on the wires. Then see what happens to a burst and to read data after an error.

A processor stored to a protected word, and its store after that must not happen: the program was supposed to stop at the fault. The new memory controller answered ERROR in a single cycle. By the edge the processor saw the error, the controller had already accepted the next store, so the fault was reported and the following word was written anyway. The specification asks for two cycles precisely so the manager can stop that second store.
Three ways to end a data phase
A subordinate controls its data phase with two outputs, HREADYOUT and HRESP. Their four combinations are the whole response vocabulary of AHB.
| HREADYOUT | HRESP | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | OKAY (0) | the transfer completes successfully |
| 0 | OKAY (0) | a wait state: the transfer is still pending |
| 0 | ERROR (1) | the first cycle of an ERROR |
| 1 | ERROR (1) | the second cycle of an ERROR: the transfer ends, failed |
IHI 0033C 5.1, Table 5-2. ERROR is never a single cycle.
A subordinate that needs time before it can decide first inserts ordinary wait states with OKAY, then gives the two ERROR cycles. A read of the protected region with mem.waits = 2 was measured. Its data phase takes four edges: two with HREADY low and OKAY, one with HREADY low and ERROR, one with both high. The read data with that ERROR is 0, as recommended.
Why two cycles
When a subordinate starts its error, the pipeline has already moved on: the address of the next transfer is on the wires. If the error ended in the same cycle, the next address would be accepted at that edge, before the manager could react. With two cycles, the manager sees HRESP high with HREADY low at the end of the first, drives IDLE instead, and the edge that ends the ERROR accepts nothing. Changing the address and the transfer type during this wait is one of the changes P4.4 listed as allowed.
xfer is HTRANS[1].A token flies when an address phase is accepted. HRESP lit means ERROR.
- Cycle 1
The store to 0x100 is accepted.
- Cycle 2
0x100 completes with OKAY, and the store to 0x9000 is accepted at the same edge.
- Cycle 3
First ERROR cycle:
HRESPhigh,HREADYlow. The store to 0x104 is already on the wires, but nothing is accepted at this edge. - Cycle 4
The manager has replaced it with IDLE. Second ERROR cycle:
HREADYhigh,HRESPhigh. The 0x9000 store ends failed; the address phase taken here is IDLE. - Cycle 5
The bus is idle and OKAY again. 0x104 was never written: the dump reads 00 there.
The first ERROR cycle is a wait state that exists to give the manager this one decision.
Cancel or continue a burst
In a burst, the transfer behind the error is the next beat. The manager may cancel the remaining beats, driving IDLE during the ERROR, or continue them; both are allowed. A cancelled burst need not be rebuilt later. The example's burst errors on beat 2 at 0x8008, and the manager cancels beat 3: the dump keeps 1c 1d 1e 1f at 0x800c. With no_cancel = 1 the same burst continues and beat 3 gets its own ERROR. The checker prints a NOTE for it, which is not a broken rule:
e6 A SEQ WRITE addr=0x8008 size=2 INCR4
NOTE cancel at edge 8: the SEQ at 0x800c behind an ERROR was kept, not cancelled (allowed; most managers cancel)
e8 D write addr=0x8008 data=0xc2 ERROR
e8 A SEQ WRITE addr=0x800c size=2 INCR4
e10 D write addr=0x800c data=0xc3 ERRORAn error does not hide data either. A manager may still use read data that came with an ERROR, so a subordinate cannot rely on the error to stop a value from being read. Driving HRDATA to zero is recommended, and the bench's memory does so. A write that gets ERROR writes nothing in this memory.
The broken twin: an ERROR in one cycle
Turn on mem.one_cycle_error in the example. The memory then raises HRESP with HREADYOUT already high, so the error and the next address are accepted at the same edge.
e5 A NONSEQ WRITE addr=0x9000 size=2 SINGLE
RULE err_shape broken at edge 6: ERROR with HREADY high in its first cycle: an ERROR takes two cycles
e6 D write addr=0x9000 data=0xdead ERROR
e6 A NONSEQ WRITE addr=0x104 size=2 SINGLE
e7 D write addr=0x104 data=0x77 OKAY
0x00100 5a 00 00 00 77 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00The checker names err_shape at the edge. The data shows the cost: the store the program meant to stop has happened.
Asked in interviews: AHB errors
Why is the AHB ERROR response two cycles?
Because the bus is pipelined: when the error starts, the next transfer's address is already on the bus. The first cycle, with HREADY low, lets the manager replace it with IDLE before the second cycle ends the transfer.
What do HREADYOUT and HRESP look like during an ERROR?
First cycle HREADYOUT low and HRESP high; second cycle HREADYOUT high and HRESP high. Any wait states before it have HRESP low.
Must the manager cancel the rest of a burst after an ERROR?
No. It may cancel the remaining beats, driving IDLE during the ERROR, or continue them. If it cancels, it need not rebuild the burst later.
Is read data with an ERROR safe to ignore?
The manager may still use it, so a subordinate cannot rely on ERROR to hide data. Driving HRDATA to zero on a read error is recommended.
What usually causes ERROR?
A protection error, such as a write to a read-only location, or an access to an address no subordinate owns, answered by the default subordinate.
Try it
The store to 0x9000 is accepted at edge 5 and gets its first ERROR cycle at edge 6. The manager cancels the store to 0x104 there, and the ERROR ends at edge 7. In the burst the same happens one beat at a time: beat 2 errors, beat 3 is dropped, and its word keeps the fill pattern.
Set mem.one_cycle_error = 1; for the broken twin. Set no_cancel = 1; to continue instead of cancelling. Set reissue = 1; (the library's default) and the cancelled single store is issued again after the ERROR, as a manager that only wanted a cycle to decide would do.

Check yourself
Remember
- A data phase ends with OKAY in one cycle, or with ERROR in two: HREADYOUT low then high, HRESP high in both.
- Wait states before an ERROR carry OKAY; only the last two cycles carry ERROR.
- The first ERROR cycle lets the manager replace the transfer already on the wires with IDLE; a one-cycle ERROR lets it through.
- After an ERROR in a burst the manager may cancel or continue the remaining beats, and need not rebuild a cancelled burst.
- A manager may still use read data that came with an ERROR; driving HRDATA to zero is recommended.
