HTRANS: IDLE, BUSY, NONSEQ, SEQ
Read the four transfer types on HTRANS, say what a subordinate owes each one, and place BUSY and IDLE correctly in and around a burst.

A small SRAM controller treated every cycle with its select high as a transfer. Between bursts the manager drove IDLE and left the last address and HWRITE on the bus, as AHB allows. The controller wrote whatever was on HWDATA in those cycles, zeros, over the word it had just stored. HTRANS exists so a subordinate can tell a real transfer from a cycle with nothing in it.
A row lights when its word is written; beat_a and beat_m are the address and lanes of the data phase that ends at the edge.
- Cycle 4
NONSEQ: the first beat of an INCR4 burst at 0x200. Its address and control have nothing to do with what came before.
- Cycle 5
SEQ at 0x204, the previous address plus four bytes, with identical control. Beat 0's data, b0, lands in the first row.
- Cycle 6
BUSY: the manager cannot send beat 2 yet. The address already shows 0x208, the next beat. Beat 1's data still lands, because its data phase is this cycle.
- Cycle 7
SEQ at 0x208: beat 2 goes out. Nothing lands in this cycle: the BUSY had no data phase, and the memory answered it with a zero-wait OKAY.
- Cycle 9
IDLE: no transfer. Address and control keep their last values, and the memory must ignore them. Beat 3's data lands.
- Cycle 11
The single read of 0x208, a NONSEQ with burst type SINGLE, returns b2.
Measured on the bench (cycle k is what edge k sees). Four rows lit, one per SEQ or NONSEQ write; the BUSY and the IDLE lit nothing.
Four transfer types
HTRANS is part of the address phase. Its upper bit says whether the address phase holds a transfer at all; its lower bit says whether the transfer continues a burst.
| HTRANS | Type | Meaning | Address and control | The subordinate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 00 | IDLE | no transfer wanted | may keep their last values | zero-wait OKAY, then ignore |
| 01 | BUSY | a pause between beats of a burst | already those of the next beat | zero-wait OKAY, then ignore |
| 10 | NONSEQ | a single transfer, or the first beat of a burst | unrelated to the previous transfer | a real transfer |
| 11 | SEQ | a later beat of a burst | previous address plus the size; control identical | a real transfer |
A subordinate starts a data phase only for NONSEQ and SEQ, and only at an edge where HREADY is high (lesson P4.2).
A single transfer is a burst of length one, so it is NONSEQ. The manager marks it with burst type SINGLE, or as an undefined-length INCR burst with one beat.
IDLE: nothing to do
A manager drives IDLE whenever it has no transfer to start. The rest of the address phase may hold anything valid; the bench keeps the last address and control, as many managers do. The decoder may even select a subordinate in an IDLE cycle. That is why a subordinate must decode HTRANS. It answers IDLE with a zero-wait OKAY and does nothing else.
The memory ignores IDLE.
ahb_write(32'h1000, 2, 32'h11111111);
idle_q(2);
ahb_read(32'h1000, 2);
go();
The read at edge 8 returns 0x11111111.
mem.act_on_idle = 1: IDLE treated as a transfer.
mem.act_on_idle = 1;
// the same three lines and go()
// the two IDLE cycles carry HWRITE = 1 and
// HADDR = 0x1000, and HWDATA = 0
The read at edge 8 returns 0: the IDLE cycles wrote zeros.
On the wires this twin looks fine: every transfer gets a zero-wait OKAY, and the checker stays silent. Give the same memory a wait state and the wires show it too. An IDLE must get a zero-wait OKAY, and this memory stretches it:
mem.act_on_idle = 1; mem.waits = 1;
ahb_write(32'h1000, 2, 32'h11111111);
idle_q(1);
go();
// RULE idle_okay broken at edge 4: an IDLE or BUSY transfer must get a zero-wait OKAY
// RULE idle_okay broken at edge 8: an IDLE or BUSY transfer must get a zero-wait OKAY
// RULE idle_okay broken at edge 10: an IDLE or BUSY transfer must get a zero-wait OKAYBUSY: a pause inside a burst
A manager that cannot supply the next beat in time, for example because its own buffer is empty, inserts BUSY. The address and control already describe the next beat, so the subordinate can look ahead, but it must answer with a zero-wait OKAY and do nothing. The beat itself follows as SEQ, with the same address.
Only between beats
BUSY belongs inside a burst. It may not follow a SINGLE transfer: after a single transfer comes IDLE or NONSEQ.
Fixed bursts end with SEQ
INCR4/8/16 and WRAP4/8/16 must finish with their last beat as SEQ, never with a BUSY after it.
Undefined INCR may end after BUSY
An INCR burst of undefined length may insert BUSY and then end with an IDLE or a NONSEQ: the manager decided it needs no more data.
The checker names the first two as burst_len. The third is legal and passes silently; the spot item below runs all three.
Where you will meet it
Every AHB subordinate decodes HTRANS[1] before it does anything, and every AHB checker counts transfers by it. Bus monitors that log a transaction for each select are wrong the same way the SRAM controller was. A bench for a subordinate drives IDLE cycles with live-looking address and control, inserts BUSY in bursts, and checks that nothing changed.
Asked in interviews: transfer types
What is the difference between IDLE and BUSY?
IDLE means no transfer is wanted. BUSY means a burst continues but its next beat is not ready; its address and control already show that next beat. Both get a zero-wait OKAY and are ignored by the subordinate.
How is a single transfer signalled?
HTRANS = NONSEQ, with burst type SINGLE or an undefined-length INCR of one beat. A single transfer is a burst of length one.
What does SEQ guarantee?
That the transfer continues the burst: the address is the previous one plus the transfer size (wrapped at the boundary for WRAP bursts) and the control is identical.
Can a burst end with BUSY?
Only an undefined-length INCR burst, followed by IDLE or NONSEQ. Fixed-length bursts end with their last beat as SEQ, and BUSY never follows a SINGLE transfer.
Try it
The beat log prints an A line for every address phase the bus accepts, the BUSY included, and a D line only for the four writes and the read. The BUSY has no data phase: between beat 1's data at edge 6 and beat 2's at edge 8 one cycle passes with no data. The dump shows b0 to b3 in four consecutive words.
Change busy_at(2, 1) to busy_at(2, 3) for three BUSY cycles: the data stays the same and every beat after the pause moves later. Then add mem.act_on_idle = 1; as the first line: the IDLE cycle after the burst writes zeros to 0x20c.

Remember
- HTRANS[1] says whether the address phase holds a transfer: NONSEQ and SEQ do, IDLE and BUSY do not.
- A subordinate answers IDLE and BUSY with a zero-wait OKAY and ignores them, even when it is selected and the address looks live.
- NONSEQ starts a single transfer or a burst; SEQ continues it at the previous address plus the size, with identical control.
- BUSY pauses a burst and already shows the next beat; it may not follow a SINGLE, and fixed-length bursts end with SEQ.
- An undefined-length INCR burst may end after BUSY with IDLE or NONSEQ.
