IDs and same-ID order: why responses come back in order
Say what an AXI ID names, explain from the wires alone why two responses with one ID must return in request order, name who enforces it and what it costs, and know which half of the rule a checker can see.

A DMA engine fetched a descriptor from external memory and a status word from on-chip SRAM, both with ID 5, the only ID it used. The memory controller served the SRAM read in two cycles and the DRAM read in six, and it sent each answer the moment it had it. The engine took the first answer as the descriptor, because the first request was, and programmed itself from the status word. Nothing on the read data channel said which answer was which; both said ID 5.
Both answers carry ID 5. Only their order tells the manager which is which.
- Cycle 1
The first read with ID 5 goes to the slow path, which needs six cycles. The manager notes: the first answer on ID 5 is this one.
- Cycle 2
The second read with ID 5 goes to the fast path.
- Cycle 4
The fast path has its data, 50, two cycles later. It may not send it: an older read with ID 5 is still open.
- Cycle 8
The slow answer, d0, leaves first and lands on the first request. The manager has no other way to pair them.
- Cycle 9
Now 50 leaves and lands on the second request. Five cycles of waiting bought the only guarantee the ID can give.
The read data channel carries the ID and nothing else that names a request. Same ID, same order: that is the whole rule.
An ID names a stream of transactions
Every AXI request carries an identifier: AWID on the write address channel, ARID on the read address channel. Every response echoes it: BID on a write response, RID on every read data beat. The width is a property of the interface, from 0 to 32 bits, and an interface with one outstanding transaction may leave the signals out.
The ID is not a serial number. A manager that needs responses in a known order gives those requests one ID. One that does not care gives them different IDs and lets the system answer in whatever order is fastest. One physical port becomes several logical ports, each in order within itself.
| Signal | Channel | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| AWID | write address | the stream this write belongs to |
| BID | write response | the AWID of the write it answers |
| ARID | read address | the stream this read belongs to |
| RID | read data, every beat | the ARID of the read it answers |
Four signals, one idea. A response names its stream and nothing more: no address, no sequence number.
Behind an interconnect the ID grows. The interconnect appends bits that name the manager port, so two managers using ID 2 never collide at a subordinate. It strips them from BID and RID on the way back.
Why the same ID must come back in order
Look at what the read data channel carries: RID, RDATA, RRESP, RLAST. No address. No request number. If a manager has two reads open with ID 5 and a beat with RID 5 arrives, the only fact available is that it came first. So the rule has to be: responses with the same ID return in the order of their requests. Any other rule would leave the manager guessing.
The specification says it in one line: transactions with a given ID value must remain ordered, and there is no restriction between different IDs. Reusing an ID is how a manager asks for that promise; a fresh ID declines it.
In the bench the memory has two paths. Addresses from 0x4000 answer six cycles after the request, like external memory; addresses below answer in two, like on-chip SRAM. The example sends a 4-beat read to the slow path and a 2-beat read to the fast path, both with ID 5, one cycle apart. The fast read has its data by edge 6 and sends it at edge 14, after the slow read's last beat.
Who holds the fast answer
Somebody has to keep the promise. When both reads land in one subordinate, the subordinate does it: it keeps the fast data until the older read with that ID has finished. When the reads go to different subordinates, neither knows about the other, so the interconnect does it. Usually it holds the second request until every response of that ID from the other target is back.
The subordinate
Serves requests in any order it likes internally, but releases responses with one ID in request order. The bench memory does this with its slow and fast paths.
The interconnect
Holds a request whose ID still has responses outstanding from a different target. On the module's fabric the second AR with ID 5 waited ten edges, from edge 4 to edge 14, until the slow memory's last beat had left.
The manager
Can avoid the question by waiting for the first response before issuing the second request with that ID. That is the safe choice when the two reads must not be reordered and throughput does not matter.
A fabric that forgets the rule is easy to build and hard to catch. With the hold switched off, the module's fabric let the fast memory answer first. The first beat on ID 6 carried 50, and the manager booked it against the slow read of 0x8100. Every edge on the wires was legal.
What the order costs
The hold is not free. In the bench a fast read behind a slow read of the same ID gets its single beat at edge 11, seven edges after its request. The same read on its own ID is answered at edge 16, three edges after its request. The extra four edges are head-of-line blocking: the fast answer stood in line behind a slower one for no reason except the ID.
That is the trade. One ID everywhere gives a simple manager and a slow system. Many IDs give throughput and a manager that must reassemble by ID, which the next lesson builds. AXI5 adds an optional unique-ID indicator, so downstream logic can skip the tracking for a request whose ID is alone in flight.
What a checker can see
Switch the bench memory to a broken mode, mem.reorder_same_id = 1, and it answers the fast read first. With a 4-beat and a 2-beat read the checker catches it. The first beats on ID 5 are credited to the oldest open read, so RLAST arrives on beat 1 of a read whose ARLEN is 3, and the rule named is rlast.
Give both reads two beats and the same checker is silent. Every handshake is legal, every RLAST lands on the right beat, and the data is simply on the wrong request. Only something that knows the expected data can see that: a scoreboard keyed by ID, which lesson P2.11 writes. Same-ID order is a protocol rule that lives in the data.
Asked in interviews: IDs and ordering
Why must responses with the same ID return in order?
Because a response carries only the ID. A manager with two open transactions on one ID can pair the answers with the requests only by their order, so the system promises that order.
Who enforces it?
The subordinate for transactions it holds itself, the interconnect for transactions that went to different subordinates, usually by holding the later request until the earlier responses are back.
What is the ID for, then?
To let a manager issue several transactions without waiting. Different IDs may complete in any order, so fast targets are not stuck behind slow ones.
How does an interconnect keep IDs unique?
It appends bits that name the manager port to AWID and ARID, so the subordinate sees a wider ID, and strips them from BID and RID on the way back.
Can a protocol checker catch same-ID reordering?
Only when the reordered transactions differ in length, through RLAST on the wrong beat. Otherwise the wires are legal and only a data check by ID sees it.
Try it
The first pair shares ID 5: the fast read's two beats wait behind the slow read's four. The second pair uses IDs 6 and 7: the fast read answers at edge 20, before the slow read starts at edge 23. The memory is the same; only the IDs changed.
Now add mem.reorder_same_id = 1; to the setup and run again. The fast read answers first on ID 5 and the checker reports rlast three times, because the beats it credits to the 4-beat read end after two. Then make both reads 2 beats long: the checker is silent and the data sits on the wrong requests.

Remember
- An ID names a stream. Requests on one ID are answered in request order; requests on different IDs may be answered in any order.
- The rule exists because a response carries only the ID: with two transactions open on one ID, a manager can pair answers with requests by order and nothing else.
- A subordinate holds the faster response; an interconnect holds the later request until the earlier responses of that ID are back.
- Reusing an ID costs head-of-line blocking: in the bench a fast read waited four extra edges behind a slow one with the same ID.
- A protocol checker catches same-ID reordering only when the lengths differ; otherwise only a data check keyed by ID sees it.
