Write strobes, byte invariance and read-modify-write
State the rules for write strobes, show why a strobed lane is the only thing a subordinate may write, place bytes the byte-invariant way whatever the endianness, and explain what a subordinate with wider words must do.

A register block took byte writes on its AXI port by writing the whole 32-bit word every time, because its registers were 32 bits wide. A 1-byte write of the interrupt enable at 0x50d cleared the three status bytes beside it. The strobes were correct on the wire; the subordinate never looked at them.
written: the lanes the subordinate changed, from its own trace. The strobes said one lane both times.
- Cycle 0
A write request for 0x509: one byte, lane 1 of the word at 0x508.
- Cycle 1
The beat carries ee in lane 1 with strobe 0010. The subordinate writes one byte. Correct.
- Cycle 4
OKAY. The neighbours 18 1a 1b are untouched.
- Cycle 6
The same kind of beat for 0x50d, strobe 0010, data ff in lane 1. This time the subordinate writes all four lanes: 00 ff 00 00. Three registers are gone.
- Cycle 9
OKAY again. Nothing on the wires was wrong, so no protocol rule fired; only the memory shows the damage.
Measured with the bench's ignore_strobes switch: 18 ee 1a 1b at 0x508, then 00 ff 00 00 at 0x50c.
One strobe per lane
WSTRB[n] belongs to WDATA[8n+7:8n]. While WVALID is 1, every byte to be written has its strobe set. Any lane inside the beat's lanes may be strobed or left alone, and no lane outside them may be strobed. A beat with no strobe set is legal and writes nothing; that is how a manager stops writing part-way through a burst it must still complete. Data on an unstrobed lane may be anything, and zero is recommended.
Lit cells are the lanes the strobes mark.
- Cycle 0
A 4-byte write at 0x500: the beat may use all four lanes.
- Cycle 1
The beat carries ddccbbaa but strobes only lanes 0 and 2. The memory writes aa at 0x500 and cc at 0x502; bb and dd ride along and are ignored.
- Cycle 4
OKAY. Measured afterwards: aa 11 cc 13. A sparse strobe is as legal as a full one.
A strobe decides per byte. The size only says which lanes the strobes may name.
| Beat | Strobe | Legal? | Bytes written |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 bytes at 0x500 | 1111 | yes | 0x500 to 0x503 |
| 4 bytes at 0x500 | 0101 | yes | 0x500 and 0x502 |
| 4 bytes at 0x500 | 0000 | yes | none; the beat still counts |
| 1 byte at 0x50c | 0001 | yes | 0x50c |
| 1 byte at 0x50c | 0110 | no: lanes 1 and 2 are outside the beat | the checker names strobe |
Inside the lanes a beat addresses, any pattern is legal. Outside them, none is.
Two ways to get it wrong
The subordinate ignores strobes
mem.ignore_strobes = 1;
wd[0] = 32'hff;
axi_write(1, 32'h50d, 0, 0, INCR); // strobe 0010
// 0x00500 ... 18 ee 1a 1b 00 ff 00 00
Three neighbours overwritten. The wires were right, so no rule fires: a scoreboard finds it.
A strobe outside the transfer
strb_force = 1; strb_val = 8'b0110;
wd[0] = 32'hcc;
axi_write(1, 32'h50c, 0, 0, INCR); // a 1-byte beat
// RULE strobe broken at edge 4: W beat 0 of write 0:
// strobe 0110 on lanes outside 0001
// 0x00500 ... 1c 00 00 1f
The manager's bug: the byte cc never lands and two neighbours are zeroed. The checker names it.
The two bugs look alike in memory and differ on the wire. Strobes are visible, so a protocol checker owns the second bug. What a subordinate does with a strobe is invisible, so the first bug belongs to the data check.
Byte invariance: the lane is the address
AXI uses byte-invariant endianness. Lane n of a bus word always carries byte address word + n, whatever the endianness of the value being moved. Endianness only decides which byte of a multi-byte value goes to the lowest address. A little-endian manager writing 0x1234 at 0x600 puts 34 at 0x600 and 12 at 0x601; a big-endian one puts 12 first. Both use lanes 0 and 1 with strobes 0011, and the bus swaps nothing.
wd[0] = 16'h1234; axi_write(1, 32'h600, 0, 1, INCR); // little-endian: 34 first
wd[0] = 16'h3412; axi_write(1, 32'h604, 0, 1, INCR); // a big-endian manager: 12 first
// 0x00600 34 12 02 03 12 34 06 07 08 09 0a 0b 0c 0d 0e 0f
// lanes 0-1 at 0x600 read back as 0x1234Because every byte keeps its own lane, a little-endian header and a big-endian payload can share one memory without corrupting each other. The specification's own example is a packet with exactly that layout. A component that only speaks big-endian needs a conversion at its port; a little-endian one connects directly.
Inside the subordinate: read-modify-write
The bench memory is a byte array, so it writes exactly the strobed bytes: with mem.trace = 1 it prints mem e4: beat 0 writes 0xee to 0x502 (lane 2) and nothing else. A subordinate that stores wider words, say 64-bit words under an error-correcting code, cannot write one byte in place. It reads the word, merges the strobed bytes, recomputes the check bits and writes the word back: a read-modify-write.
// Merge one beat into a wider word: only the strobed bytes change.
word = mem_word[addr >> 3];
for (int l = 0; l < 8; l++)
if (wstrb[l]) word[8*l +: 8] = wdata[8*l +: 8];
mem_word[addr >> 3] = word; // then recompute the check bitsThat costs a cycle and creates a hazard: a read that slips in between must see the merged word, not the old one. AXI4-Lite names the shortcut register blocks take. A Lite subordinate may use the strobes, ignore them and treat every write as full width, or answer an error for patterns it does not support. One that provides memory must honour them in full. Full AXI has no such escape, and the opening story is what the shortcut costs when the software does not know about it.
In the field
Strobes carry every byte-wide and halfword-wide store a processor makes, and byte invariance is why a mixed-endian system needs no byte swapper on the bus. Both show up in interviews as "what happens if".
Asked in interviews: strobes and endianness
What does WSTRB[2] mean?
That WDATA[23:16], lane 2, holds a byte to be written to byte address word + 2. A lane with its strobe low must be left alone by the subordinate.
Is a strobe pattern like 0101 legal?
Yes, inside the lanes the beat addresses any pattern is legal, including all zeros. Outside them every strobe must be low.
What happens if a subordinate ignores strobes?
Every partial write becomes a full write and the neighbouring bytes are corrupted. No protocol rule fires, because the strobes on the wire were right; only a data check catches it.
What is byte-invariant endianness?
Lane n always carries byte address word + n. Endianness decides which byte of a value sits at the lowest address, not which lane a byte uses, so mixed-endian data can share a memory.
How does a subordinate with ECC words handle a byte write?
By read-modify-write: read the word, merge the strobed bytes, recompute the check bits, write it back. It must keep a read that arrives in between from seeing the stale word.
May an AXI4-Lite register block ignore strobes?
A Lite subordinate may use them, ignore them and treat writes as full width, or reject unsupported patterns with an error, but one that provides memory must support them fully.
Try it
The first dump shows the sparse strobe at work: aa and cc landed, 11 and 13 stayed. The second shows a byte write that keeps its neighbours. The third is the twin: the same beat shape, and the subordinate with ignore_strobes set writes 00 ff 00 00 over 1c 1d 1e 1f. The checker counts three good writes, because every strobe on the wire was legal.
Set strb_val to 0000 for the first write and the dump stays 10 11 12 13: a legal beat that writes nothing. Set it to 0110 for the 1-byte write at 0x509 and the checker names strobe.

Remember
WSTRB[n]belongs to lane n,WDATA[8n+7:8n]. A strobed byte is written; an unstrobed lane is left alone, whatever data it carries.- Inside the lanes a beat addresses, any strobe pattern is legal, including none. Outside them, every strobe must be low; the checker names it.
- A subordinate that ignores strobes corrupts neighbours without breaking a protocol rule. Only a data check finds it.
- Byte invariance: lane n always carries byte address word + n. Endianness decides the order of a value's bytes, never their lanes.
- A subordinate with wider words merges strobed bytes by read-modify-write and must keep a read in between from seeing the stale word.
