The ordering model: reads versus writes
Say what AXI orders and what it leaves open, explain why a read may overtake a write even on the same ID and even after the last data beat, name the one event that closes the window, and know what subordinates and interconnects owe the manager.

A processor wrote a DMA descriptor to memory and read the same address back one cycle after the last data beat, with the same ID. The read returned the old descriptor. The designer's first words were "but the data had gone, on the same ID". The ordering model answers: the same ID orders writes among writes and reads among reads, and only the write's response puts a read behind it.
Five channels, one ID. The read channels owe the write channels nothing until B has been given.
- Cycle 1
AW for 0x200 is accepted. The write has started: the memory knows the address and nothing else.
- Cycle 2
The only data beat is accepted, with WLAST. For the manager the write is sent; for the memory it sits in a write buffer, not yet applied.
- Cycle 3
AR for 0x200 is accepted on its own channel, with the same ID. Nothing in the protocol places it after the write.
- Cycle 6
The read returns 11, the old value. The write was complete on the wires and still invisible.
- Cycle 9
B: the memory applies the write as it answers. From this cycle a read of 0x200 from any manager returns 22.
- Cycle 10
Waiting for that response before the dependent read is the manager's only ordering tool.
The same ID on AW and AR changed nothing, and neither did the last data beat. The write became visible at B, and the read came before B.
What the ordering model promises
AXI orders very little, on purpose. Requests on one channel with the same ID and the same destination stay in order, and responses with the same ID return in request order. That is the whole list. Between the following pairs there is no promise at all, and a manager that needs one must wait for the first transaction's response before issuing the second.
| Between | Ordered? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| two writes, same ID, same location | yes | the second is observed after the first, even before any response |
| two responses, same ID | yes | they return in request order |
| a read and a write, any IDs | no | the read and write channels are independent |
| two transactions with different IDs | no | different IDs promise nothing to each other |
| transactions from different managers | no | nobody sees both |
| transactions to different locations or regions | no | guarantees are given per location or per region |
The ordering model. Same ID orders writes among writes and reads among reads; a read against a write is never ordered.
Everything below follows from the third row, the one engineers forget: the same ID feels like "in order", and on the address channels it is. The data moves on other channels, which are independent.
Why a read can overtake a write
The example writes 0x22222222 to 0x200 with ID 1, address at edge 3 and the single data beat at edge 4, and issues a read of 0x200 with the same ID at edge 5. The memory answers the read at edge 8 with 0x14131211, the value it held. The write response arrives at edge 11, and a second read, issued after it, returns 0x22222222.
Nothing here is a bug. The bench memory keeps a write in a buffer until it answers it, as a controller with a write queue does. A subordinate owes a read the result of a write only when that read arrives after the write's completion response. The fix is one line: wait for B before a read that must see the write.
The window
From the write request until its B, the write may or may not be visible. A read in this window may return either value, whatever its ID.
What closes it
The B handshake. After it, the write is observable to every manager's later reads and writes.
What does not close it
The same ID, the AW handshake, or the last write data beat. The example's read came after WLAST and still saw the old value.
What a completion response guarantees
A write completes at the B handshake; a read at the handshake of its last data beat. A completion promises two things. The access is observable to any later read or write from any manager, and every earlier transaction of the same kind with the same ID has completed.
Bufferable writes bend the first promise a little. An intermediate component may answer one early, before the data reaches its endpoint, if it takes responsibility for ordering everything behind it. The response still guarantees observability within the write's domain. A non-bufferable write's response means the data is at the endpoint.
Two writes, one ID, one location
The last part of the example issues two writes to 0x200 with ID 1 back to back, 0x33333333 then 0x44444444, without waiting for the first response. A read after both responses returns 0x44444444. That order is a guarantee, not luck: a write is observed by a later write with the same ID to the same location even before any response is received. A producer can stream writes on one ID and know they land in order.
Subordinates and interconnects carry that promise. A subordinate must order two same-ID writes to one location by arrival. It must also order a write before a read, or a read before a write, when the second arrives after the first's completion response was given. An interconnect must issue same-ID requests to overlapping locations in the order it received them and return same-ID responses in order. Any change it makes to IDs must keep those requirements.
An interface may offer more. With the Ordered Write Observation property, writes from one manager with one ID are observed in order whatever their destination. A producer then need not wait for responses between dependent writes. Without it, the guarantee holds per location only.
Memory locations, peripheral regions, Device and Normal
The address map is made of memory locations and peripheral regions, and the guarantees differ. A memory location returns the last value written to it and touching it affects no other location. A peripheral region promises none of that: a read may not return what was written, and an access may have side effects in the region. Ordering for memory is per location; for a peripheral it is per region, which must sit inside one subordinate.
A transaction is Device when AxCACHE[1] is 0 and Normal when it is 1. Device transactions to one peripheral region with the same ID arrive there in issue order, which is what a register sequence needs. Normal transactions are for memory; a Normal access to a peripheral completes legally but with an implementation-defined result. Cacheable, non-cacheable and Device requests are not ordered against each other, except that same-ID responses stay in order. Whether Device may overtake Normal non-cacheable to one location is an interface property.
Asked in interviews: the ordering model
Does the same ID order a read after a write?
No. The same ID orders writes among writes and reads among reads. A read may be answered before a write that was issued earlier on the same ID.
When is a write guaranteed visible?
After its B handshake. From then on any manager's later read or write observes it. A bufferable write may be answered early by an intermediate point that then owns the ordering.
How does a manager make a read see its own write?
It waits for B before issuing the read. Nothing on the address channels, and not the last data beat, provides that guarantee.
May a manager stream writes on one ID without waiting?
Yes, to one location: the second write is observed after the first. Across locations only an interface with Ordered Write Observation promises that.
What is the difference between a memory location and a peripheral region?
A memory location returns the last value written and has no side effects; a peripheral region may do neither, and its guarantees are per region, using Device transactions.
Try it
Three scenes. The read issued one edge after the write's last beat returns the old value, and the checker has nothing to say: every handshake was legal. The read issued after B returns the new value. The two writes streamed on one ID land in order, and a read after their responses sees the second.
Set mem.posted = 0; in the setup and run again. The memory now applies a write at its last beat and the first read returns 0x22222222. Nothing in the protocol promised that; the buffering memory is the honest model, and B is the only guarantee.

Remember
- AXI orders requests with the same ID and destination, and same-ID responses; it never orders a read against a write, whatever the IDs.
- A read issued before a write's response may return the old value, even with the same ID and even after the last write data beat.
- A completion response, B or the last read beat, makes the access observable to every manager; waiting for it is the manager's only ordering tool.
- Two writes with one ID to one location are observed in order without waiting; subordinates order them by arrival and interconnects issue them in order.
- Memory locations return the last value written; peripheral regions may not, and are accessed with Device transactions ordered per region.
