Narrow transfers, byte lanes and width conversion
Say which byte lanes a transfer narrower than the bus uses on every beat, put the data where those lanes are, and explain what a width converter may and may not change.

A DMA engine streamed 16-bit samples into a 32-bit buffer with AWSIZE set to two bytes. Every second sample came back as zero. The engine had put each sample in lanes 0 and 1 and set the strobes the address asked for. On the odd beats the strobed lanes carried nothing, and the checker had no rule to break.
A lit cell is a byte the memory wrote in that beat.
- Cycle 0
The request: four transfers of two bytes from 0x3000, an INCR burst.
- Cycle 1
Beat 0 is for 0x3000: lanes 0 and 1, strobe 0011, sample 1111 in the low half. Correct.
- Cycle 2
Beat 1 is for 0x3002: lanes 2 and 3, strobe 1100. The engine left 2222 in the low half, so lanes 2 and 3 carry zeros, and the memory writes the zeros.
- Cycle 3
Beat 2 is back in the low lanes, so 3333 lands where it should.
- Cycle 4
Beat 3 repeats the mistake at 0x3006. The strobes were legal on every beat; the data was in the wrong place on two of them.
Measured on the bench: the buffer reads 11 11 00 00 33 33 00 00 afterwards, and the checker reports no broken rule.
Size, width and the lanes a beat uses
AxSIZE is the number of bytes in one transfer: 1, 2, 4 and so on up to 128, encoded as a power of two. It may never exceed the width of the data bus. When it is smaller, the beat is a narrow transfer and uses a subset of the byte lanes. The subset comes from the address, as in P1.8: lane l of the bus carries byte address word + l, where word is the address rounded down to the bus width.
For an INCR or WRAP burst the address advances with every beat, so the lanes walk across the bus. A FIXED burst repeats its address, so every beat uses the same lanes. The table is the bench's own beat_table for five 1-byte beats from 0x2001.
| Beat | Address | Lanes | Strobe |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0x2001 | 1 | 0010 |
| 1 | 0x2002 | 2 | 0100 |
| 2 | 0x2003 | 3 | 1000 |
| 3 | 0x2004 | 0 | 0001 |
| 4 | 0x2005 | 1 | 0010 |
Five 1-byte beats on a 32-bit bus. The lane is the low two address bits; beat 3 crosses into the next word and starts again at lane 0.
The data has to sit in those lanes. The library shifts each beat's bytes up by eight bits per lane: wdata = wd[n] << (8 * lower_lane). A beat for 0x2002 therefore carries its byte in bits 16 to 23, and its only strobe is bit 2.
Lane 0 is the lowest address of each row.
- Cycle 0
The request: five transfers of one byte from 0x2001.
- Cycle 1
Beat 0 is for 0x2001, lane 1 of the word at 0x2000: the byte b0 travels in bits 8 to 15 and only strobe 1 is set.
- Cycle 2
Beat 1 moves to lane 2, beat 2 to lane 3. The data shifts with the lane.
- Cycle 4
Beat 3 is for 0x2004, the next word: lane 0 again, bits 0 to 7.
- Cycle 5
Beat 4 ends the burst in lane 1 of the second row. Five bytes, five lanes, one strobe each.
Measured: the memory reads 00 b0 b1 b2 b3 b4 afterwards. A FIXED burst at 0x2001 would light lane 1 five times.
What the strobe rule cannot see
The strobe rule says a strobe may be set only on a lane the beat addresses. It says nothing about where the data is. A manager that leaves every beat in lanes 0 and 1 and strobes lanes 2 and 3 breaks no rule: the strobed lanes are legal, they merely carry zeros. The memory writes the zeros, which is what the opening story found.
Data left in the low lanes
// beat 1 of the burst at 0x3000, size 2
wdata = 32'h00002222; wstrb = 4'b1100;
// 0x03000 11 11 00 00 33 33 00 00
Legal strobes, wrong lanes. The checker is silent and the buffer holds zeros.
Data shifted into its lanes
// what w_burst does for every beat
wdata = wd[n] << (8 * lower_lane);
// 0x03000 11 11 22 22 33 33 44 44
The sample rides in lanes 2 and 3 and lands at 0x3002.
Width conversion: a 32-bit manager on a 64-bit bus
A 32-bit manager behind a 64-bit subordinate needs no new rules. A 4-byte transfer on an 8-byte bus is a narrow transfer, so an upsizer only steers lanes. A beat for 0x1000 goes into lanes 0 to 3 and a beat for 0x1004 into lanes 4 to 7; the strobes move with it. AxSIZE and AxLEN pass through unchanged, and the subordinate sees four narrow beats.
e3 AW id=1 addr=0x1000 len=3 size=2 INCR
width e4: W beat 0 at 0x1000 goes to the lower half, strobe 00001111
width e5: W beat 1 at 0x1004 goes to the upper half, strobe 11110000
width e6: W beat 2 at 0x1008 goes to the lower half, strobe 00001111
width e7: W beat 3 at 0x100c goes to the upper half, strobe 11110000
0x01000 a0 00 00 00 a1 00 00 00 a2 00 00 00 a3 00 00 00Packing two 4-byte beats into one 8-byte beat would halve the beat count, but it changes AxSIZE and AxLEN. The specification allows that only for a Modifiable transaction, AxCACHE[1] set. A Non-modifiable transaction keeps its address, size, length and burst type, so an upsizer must leave it as narrow beats (P2.14 covers the attribute).
Downsizing has no such choice. An 8-byte beat cannot fit a 4-byte bus, so a downsizer splits it into two beats and doubles the length even for a Non-modifiable transaction. The specification lets it signal that it did.
| Channel | Upsizer, 32 to 64 bits | Downsizer, 64 to 32 bits |
|---|---|---|
| AW, AR | passed through: size, length, burst unchanged | size halved, length doubled, address kept |
| W | data placed in the half the beat address names; strobes shifted with it | each beat split in two, lower half first |
| B | passed through | passed through, one response per transaction |
| R | the half the beat address names is returned | two beats merged into one |
What a width converter touches. Only the downsizer rewrites the request, because it cannot avoid it.
In the field
Register blocks are the usual home of narrow transfers: a 32-bit peripheral on a 64-bit bus, a byte-wide status register, a 16-bit sample port. Every one of them relies on the manager placing data in the right lanes, and every width converter between them steers those lanes.
Asked in interviews: narrow transfers and width conversion
What is a narrow transfer?
A beat whose AxSIZE is smaller than the data bus. It uses only the lanes its address names, and the strobes mark those lanes.
May AxSIZE be larger than the data bus?
No. The size must not exceed the data width; the checker names it size. A converter may lower the size on the way down, never raise it.
Which lanes does beat n of a narrow INCR burst use?
The lanes of its own address: lower lane equals address modulo bus bytes, and the beat spans AxSIZE bytes from there. The address moves every beat, so the lanes walk across the bus and wrap at each word.
What does a FIXED burst do with the lanes?
Every beat has the same address, so every beat uses the same lanes. That is the FIFO case: one register, many beats.
How does a 32-bit manager talk to a 64-bit subordinate?
Through an upsizer that places each 4-byte beat in the half of the wide word its address names and shifts the strobes with it. Size and length are unchanged; the subordinate sees narrow beats.
Can an upsizer merge two beats into one wide beat?
Only if the transaction is Modifiable, AxCACHE[1] set. Merging changes AxSIZE and AxLEN, which a Non-modifiable transaction forbids.
Try it
The table comes first and the beat log agrees with it line by line: beat 1 carries 2222 in bits 16 to 31 with strobe 1100, because 0x3002 is lane 2 of the word at 0x3000. The read from 0x3002 takes its first beat from lanes 2 and 3 and its second from lanes 0 and 1 of the next word.
Change the size to 0 and the length to 7 to see eight 1-byte beats walk the lanes. Then change the start to 0x3001 with size 1: the first beat is partial, which is the subject of P2.8.

Remember
AxSIZEis the bytes per transfer and never exceeds the bus width. A smaller size is a narrow transfer that uses a subset of the lanes.- The lanes come from the address: lane l carries byte address word + l. INCR and WRAP bursts walk the lanes; FIXED bursts reuse them.
- The data must be placed in those lanes. Correct strobes with data in the wrong lanes break no rule and write garbage; only a data check sees it.
- An upsizer steers each narrow beat into the half of the wide word its address names and shifts the strobes; size and length do not change.
- Merging beats needs a Modifiable transaction (
AxCACHE[1]). A downsizer must split beats even when the transaction is not modifiable.
