Different IDs: out of order and interleaving
Know when a system may answer out of order, what read data interleaving is and where it is forbidden, why write data never interleaves in AXI4, and how a scoreboard must be keyed so that legal reorders are not reported as errors.

A memory controller with two banks returned the first beat of a read with ID 2 between the first and second beats of a read with ID 1. The verification engineer filed a bug: "read data of one burst split by another burst". The designer closed it in one line: the two reads carry different IDs, and AXI4 lets a subordinate interleave them. The bug moved to the monitor, which had assembled beats by arrival and had no idea which transaction each beat belonged to.
Each queue holds what the manager still expects on that ID. A beat with RID 1 can only be the head of queue 1.
- Cycle 1
ID 1 asks for four beats from 0x100. The manager queues the four values it expects on ID 1.
- Cycle 2
ID 2 asks for four beats from 0x200, one cycle later.
- Cycle 4
The first beat is 50 with RID 1: the head of queue 1, as it must be.
- Cycle 5
The next beat carries RID 2. The memory is interleaving the two transactions, which AXI4 allows between different IDs.
- Cycle 6
RID 1 again, with 51, the new head of queue 1. Within one ID the order never changes.
- Cycle 10
RLAST with RID 1: transaction 1 is complete and queue 1 is empty.
- Cycle 11
RLAST with RID 2 one cycle later. Nothing was mispaired, because every beat was matched against its own queue.
Interleaving mixes transactions; it never reorders the beats of one transaction. The ID on every beat makes that safe.
Different IDs answer by readiness
The previous lesson gave the rule for one ID. For different IDs there is no rule at all. A system may answer them in any order, and a well-built one answers each as soon as it can. On the bench, a 4-beat read on ID 6 goes to the slow region and a 2-beat read on ID 7 to the fast region, one cycle apart. They come back fast first: ID 7 at edges 20 and 21, ID 6 from edge 23.
Two kinds of component reorder. A subordinate with several internal paths may answer whichever request finishes first. The specification calls the number of accepted requests it may answer out of order its read data reordering depth; a subordinate that answers in order has a depth of one. The depth is fixed at design time, and a manager has no way to ask for it on the bus. An interconnect with several subordinates reorders too, because a fast subordinate answers while a slow one is still working.
The manager must be built for both. It cannot assume that the first beat back belongs to the first request, and it cannot assume that one subordinate is in order just because it was yesterday. Pairing by ID is the only pairing that survives every legal system.
Interleaving: beats of two transactions, turn by turn
Out of order concerns whole transactions. Interleaving goes one step further: a subordinate may send a beat of one read, then a beat of another, then return to the first. The example shows it. Two 4-beat reads, IDs 1 and 2, come back as 50, 60, 51, 61, 52, 62, 53, 63, with RID naming the owner of every beat and RLAST closing each transaction in turn.
Two conditions apply. Interleaved beats must belong to transactions with different IDs: with one ID the first transaction finishes before the second starts, as the previous lesson showed. And within a transaction the beats stay in address order; interleaving never shuffles them. A manager that issues several IDs must accept interleaved data. The specification adds an interface property, Read_Interleaving_Disabled, for a manager that cannot: a subordinate connected to it promises not to interleave, which lets both sides keep smaller buffers.
| Freedom | What may move | Where it is allowed | What stays fixed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Out of order | whole transactions | between different IDs | the order of transactions with one ID |
| Interleaving | single read data beats | between different IDs | the beat order inside each transaction |
| Neither | nothing | within one ID | everything: request order, beat order |
Two separate freedoms, both bounded by the ID.
Write data never interleaves in AXI4
The write side is stricter. A manager must send write data in the same order as its write addresses. The beats of one burst stay together: WLAST closes a burst before the next burst's first beat. There is no ID on the write data channel, so nothing could name an interleaved beat's owner. AXI3 had one, WID, and allowed interleaved write data; AXI4 removed both, which is why a monitor can split the write data stream with WLAST and the address order alone. AXI5's credited transport brings a limited form back on separate resource planes, which this module does not use.
Write responses, on the other hand, follow the same rules as read data: one B per transaction, in order within an ID, in any order between IDs.
What a scoreboard keys on
The example runs two scoreboards over the same eight beats. Scoreboard A expects request order: the four beats of ID 1, then the four of ID 2. It reports six mismatches on a run where nothing was wrong. Scoreboard B keeps one queue of expected values per ID and compares each beat with the head of its own queue. It reports none.
Key by ID
One expected queue per ID, filled in request order when the request is accepted. A beat with RID 2 is compared with the head of queue 2 and with nothing else.
Count beats per transaction
The beat index inside a transaction is the number of beats already received on that ID for it, not the position in the arrival stream.
Close on RLAST
RLAST ends the oldest open transaction on that ID. The next beat with the same ID belongs to the next one.
This is the same scoreboard the UVM track builds in U8.2, and the monitor of lesson P2.17 assembles transactions by exactly these rules. Arrival order is not information; the ID is.
Asked in interviews: out of order and interleaving
When may responses come back out of order?
Whenever they carry different IDs. A subordinate with several paths or an interconnect with several subordinates answers each as soon as it can.
What is read data interleaving?
A subordinate sending a beat of one read between the beats of another. AXI4 allows it between different IDs; the beats of one transaction stay in order.
Can write data interleave?
Not in AXI4: write data follows the address order and a burst's beats stay together. AXI3 allowed it with WID.
What is the read data reordering depth?
The number of accepted requests a subordinate may answer out of order; one means in order. It is fixed at design time and not discoverable on the bus.
What does a scoreboard key on?
The ID, with one expected queue per ID in request order, counting beats per transaction and closing it on RLAST. One global queue reports legal reorders as errors.
Try it
The memory alternates between the two reads from edge 6 to edge 13. The scoreboard that expected request order is wrong six times out of eight; the one keyed by ID is never wrong, and the protocol checker has nothing to say, because nothing illegal happened.
Set mem.interleave = 0; and run again: the beats of ID 1 come first, then ID 2, and both scoreboards agree. Then give both reads ID 1: the memory may no longer interleave them, and the second read waits for the first.

Remember
- Responses on different IDs return in any order, usually by readiness; a subordinate's read data reordering depth says how far it may go.
- Read data of different IDs may be interleaved beat by beat; the beats of one transaction keep their order, and one ID is never interleaved with itself.
- Write data never interleaves in AXI4: it follows the address order and a burst's beats stay together, which is why there is no WID.
- A manager that issues several IDs must accept out-of-order and interleaved data; the Read_Interleaving_Disabled property is the opt-out.
- A scoreboard keys on the ID: one expected queue per ID, beats counted per transaction, closed on RLAST. Arrival order is not information.
