The handshake, the clock and reset, AXI style
Apply the valid/ready rules to every AXI channel by name, tell a withdrawn READY (legal) from a withdrawn VALID (a bug), and say when the first VALID may rise after reset.

A DMA engine was coded to raise AWVALID only once it saw AWREADY: its author did not want to offer an address to a port that could not take it. The interconnect port it was wired to raised AWREADY only once it saw AWVALID, because its author did not want to advertise room before there was a request. Both blocks passed their own tests. Together they sat forever on the first write, each politely waiting for the other, until the watchdog reset the chip.
Both blocks wait. Neither wire lights, so no address ever moves.
- Cycle 0
The engine has an address to send. It will raise
AWVALIDas soon as it seesAWREADY. - Cycle 1
The port has four free request slots. It will raise
AWREADYas soon as it seesAWVALID. - Cycle 4
Four edges later nothing has changed, and nothing ever will. The protocol settles who moves first; the engine broke that rule.
The deadlock of P1.3 with AXI names. The port did nothing wrong: a subordinate may wait for VALID.
The same four rules on five channels
Every AXI channel is the valid/ready handshake of P1.3, and the four rules carry over unchanged. A transfer happens at a rising edge of ACLK where the channel's VALID and READY are both 1, and at no other edge. Once VALID is 1 it stays 1, with the same payload, until that edge. VALID never waits for READY; READY may wait for VALID or be high in advance. And VALID is 0 in reset.
| Channel | VALID (held with the payload) | READY (permission from the other side) |
|---|---|---|
| AW | AWVALID, manager | AWREADY, subordinate |
| W | WVALID, manager | WREADY, subordinate |
| B | BVALID, subordinate | BREADY, manager |
| AR | ARVALID, manager | ARREADY, subordinate |
| R | RVALID, subordinate | RREADY, manager |
Five pairs. The side that drives VALID owns the payload of that channel; the other side drives READY.
The specification draws three timings of one handshake; the bench shows all three in one run.
A lit wire carries a 1. A pill is a transfer in that cycle.
- Cycle 3
READY before VALID:
AWREADYhas been high since reset ended, so the address moves in the first cycle it is offered. - Cycle 6
The manager drops
RREADYfor a cycle while no read data is on the channel. Legal: READY may be withdrawn before VALID arrives. - Cycle 7
Same cycle:
RVALIDandRREADYboth rise, and the read beat moves at once. MeanwhileBVALIDrises whileBREADYis 0. - Cycle 8
VALID before READY: the response is held. Same
BID, sameBRESP, nothing withdrawn. - Cycle 9
BREADYrises and the response moves. Two stalled edges, one transfer, as the checker counts it.
Measured on the bench. The stalled edges are the ones where BVALID is 1 and BREADY is 0.
The deadlock, and the rule that prevents it
Rule 3 is the one the opening story broke, and no checker can see it on the wires. A VALID that waits for READY looks exactly like a VALID that is simply late; the only symptom is a link that never moves. The specification states it as a dependency. The sending side's VALID must not depend on the receiving side's READY, while the receiving side may wait for VALID before it asserts READY.
The example bench has a side link with a polite port: it raises p_ready one edge after it sees p_valid. A manager that waits for p_ready first never gets it; the same manager, offering first, is served two edges later.
// The polite manager: wait for ready, then offer. Nothing moves.
wait (p_ready === 1); p_valid = 1;
// Rule 3: offer first, hold until taken. The port answers one edge later.
p_valid = 1;
do @(posedge aclk); while (!p_ready);Why is the asymmetry this way round? A subordinate often needs the request before it knows whether it has room for it. A decoder needs the address to pick a port, and a memory controller needs the burst length to reserve a buffer. Making the manager move first costs nothing, since it has the request already. Making READY high in advance, where a subordinate can, saves the cycle.
Withdrawing READY and withdrawing VALID
The two signals are not symmetric. A READY may drop again before any VALID arrives: the manager in the stepper above dropped RREADY for one cycle and broke nothing. A VALID may not drop until the transfer, and its payload may not change: the offer is a promise.
The memory of the bench takes a beat the moment it is offered, so it cannot show a withdrawn offer. The fabric of lesson P2.10 can: it holds WREADY low for a write beat that arrives before its address. Offer a beat, drop it after one edge, and the checker names the rule.
Withdrawn: the hold rule
wvalid = 1; wdata = wd[0]; wstrb = 4'b1111; wlast = 1;
@(posedge aclk);
#1 wvalid = 0; // the fabric was not ready: give up
idle(2);
axi_write(1, 32'h200, 0, 2, INCR);
RULE hold broken at edge 5: WVALID dropped before WREADY.
Held: the beat waits for its address
axi_write(1, 32'h200, 0, 2, INCR, 1); // data first
// e4 AW id=1 addr=0x200 len=0 size=2 INCR
// e5 W beat 0 data=0xb0 strb=1111 last=1
// checker: ... 2 stalled edges, 0 rules broken
The beat is offered at edge 3, taken at edge 5. Two stalled edges, no rule broken.
The subordinate side has the same duty on B and R. Flip mem.drop_hold = 1 and the memory changes RDATA while a beat waits for RREADY. The checker reports stable on R at every edge where the payload moved, and the data the manager finally takes is wrong.
The clock and reset
Every AXI signal is sampled on the rising edge of ACLK, and every output changes only after a rising edge. There must be no combinational path from an input of an interface to an output of the same interface: AWREADY may not be computed from AWVALID in the same cycle.
Reset is one active-low signal, ARESETn, asserted asynchronously and released synchronously at a rising edge of ACLK. While it is asserted, the manager drives AWVALID, WVALID and ARVALID low and the subordinate drives BVALID and RVALID low; everything else may hold any value. The earliest a VALID may rise is after the first rising edge at which ARESETn is high.
- Cycle 0
Reset is asserted. Every VALID is 0; the memory holds its READYs low too.
- Cycle 2
The first edge where
ARESETnsamples high. Nothing may be driven yet; after this edge the manager is allowed to offer. - Cycle 3
AWVALIDrises after edge 2 andAWREADYis high: the first address moves at edge 3. The checker would report reset for any VALID seen high at edges 0 or 1.
Measured on the bench: the first request of every lesson starts after edge 2 for exactly this reason.
The broken twin is one line: drive awvalid = 1 before reset is released, and the checker prints reset at edges 0 and 1.
Where you will meet it
Register slices, clock-domain bridges and interconnect ports are built from exactly these rules. A block that violates the hold rule passes every test where the other side happens to be ready, and fails the first time a slice adds a stall. That is why the first bench of any AXI block is a stalling one.
Asked in interviews: the AXI handshake
Why must VALID not depend on READY?
Because the specification lets the receiving side wait for VALID before asserting READY. If the sender also waited, neither signal would ever rise: a deadlock on the first transfer. The rule gives the sender the first move.
May a subordinate drop AWREADY without accepting anything?
Yes. READY may be asserted and deasserted freely while no transfer happens. Only VALID is committed: once high it stays high, with the same payload, until the handshake.
What are the reset rules?
ARESETn is active low, asserted asynchronously, released synchronously. In reset the manager holds AWVALID, WVALID and ARVALID low and the subordinate holds BVALID and RVALID low. A VALID may first rise after the first rising clock edge at which ARESETn is high.
How does a stall look on the wires?
VALID is 1 and READY is 0 at a rising edge. The payload is unchanged at the next edge. A checker counts those edges; a monitor must not count them as transfers.
Try it
The address moves at edge 3 (READY was waiting), the write beat and the read address at edge 4. The read data appears at edge 7 in the same cycle as RREADY returns, so it moves at once; the write response appears at edge 7 too, but BREADY is low at edges 7 and 8, so B is held and moves at edge 9. The two stalled edges in the summary are those two.
Set mem.drop_hold = 1 in the stimulus before the fork and run again with ready_pattern(0, 16'b1111_1111_0001_1111) (RREADY low at edges 6 to 8): the memory changes the held read data and the checker names stable on R.

Remember
- Every AXI channel obeys the four handshake rules: transfer when both are 1, hold the offer, VALID never waits for READY, VALID low in reset.
- The side that drives VALID owns the payload; the other side drives READY. READY may drop before VALID arrives; VALID may not drop before the transfer.
- Rule 3 prevents the deadlock of two polite blocks, and no checker can see it on the wires: the only symptom is a link that never moves.
- ARESETn is asserted asynchronously and released at a clock edge; the first VALID may rise after the first edge that samples it high.
- No output of an interface may depend combinationally on an input of the same interface in the same cycle.
