Unaligned transfers: mapping any transfer onto memory
Work out, for any start address, transfer size and length, exactly which bytes each beat moves, which lanes carry them, and which bytes of an unaligned read are yours.

A driver wrote a 12-byte packet header at 0x1003 with three 4-byte beats and every strobe set, on the grounds that a first beat is a whole word anyway. The three bytes before the header, the tail of the previous packet, became zero. The checker named the rule at the first beat: a strobe on a lane the beat does not address.
A lit cell is a byte the memory wrote. The burst starts at 0x1003, lane 3 of the first row.
- Cycle 0
The request: three 4-byte transfers from 0x1003. The start is not a multiple of four.
- Cycle 1
Beat 0 addresses only 0x1003, but its strobes are 1111. Lanes 0 to 2 light as well: 0x1000 to 0x1002 are overwritten with the zeros the data carried there. The checker names strobe at this edge.
- Cycle 2
Beat 1 is at 0x1004 and is a full beat, as every beat after the first is.
- Cycle 3
Beat 2 at 0x1008 is full too. The damage is already done, three rows above the end.
Measured: the memory reads 00 00 00 11 22 33 44 55 afterwards; the bench's strobe rule fired at edge 4.
Beat 0 is the odd one
An INCR burst may start at any byte address; only a WRAP burst must start aligned. The first beat then covers the bytes from the start address to the end of its aligned transfer: at 0x1003 with 4-byte transfers that is one byte, in lane 3. Every later beat is aligned and full. The burst therefore moves fewer bytes than AxLEN + 1 times AxSIZE, and the specification says so in as many words.
| Beat | Address | Lanes | Strobe | Bytes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0x1003 | 3 | 1000 | 1, at 0x1003 |
| 1 | 0x1004 | 0 to 3 | 1111 | 4, at 0x1004 to 0x1007 |
| 2 | 0x1008 | 0 to 3 | 1111 | 4, at 0x1008 to 0x100b |
Three 4-byte beats from 0x1003 on a 32-bit bus, as the bench's beat_table prints them: nine bytes, not twelve.
Lane 0 is the lowest address of each row.
- Cycle 0
The request names 0x1003 as the start. Nothing in the request says "partial"; the lanes follow from the address.
- Cycle 1
Beat 0: the byte 11 rides in lane 3, bits 24 to 31, and only strobe 3 is set. One cell lights.
- Cycle 2
Beat 1 is at 0x1004, the aligned address after the start: four bytes, four strobes, a whole row.
- Cycle 3
Beat 2 at 0x1008 is the last and is full as well. The burst ends at 0x100b, the end of its window, not at 0x100e.
- Cycle 6
One response for the whole burst, after the last beat.
Measured: a0 a1 a2 11 22 33 44 55 66 77 88 00 ac ad ae af. The bytes before the start are untouched.
The specification offers a second way to say the same thing: give the aligned address 0x1000 and let the strobes of beat 0 mark lane 3 only. The low address bits and the strobes must agree, and a subordinate uses the strobes, not the address bits, to decide what to write.
Notice where the burst ends. The window of a burst is AxLEN + 1 aligned transfers from the aligned start, 0x1000 to 0x100b here, and the last beat fills the window. To move twelve bytes from 0x1003 you need four beats, and the fourth is partial in turn.
The twin: a full first beat
Every strobe set on beat 0
strb_force = 1; strb_val = 8'b1111;
axi_write(1, 32'h1003, 2, 2, INCR);
// RULE strobe broken at edge 4: W beat 0 of write 0:
// strobe 1111 on lanes outside 1000
// 0x01000 00 00 00 11 22 33 44 55 66 77 88 00 ac ad ae af
Three bytes before the start are overwritten, and the checker names the rule.
The strobes the address calls for
axi_write(1, 32'h1003, 2, 2, INCR);
// beat 0 strobe 1000, beats 1 and 2 strobe 1111
// 0x01000 a0 a1 a2 11 22 33 44 55 66 77 88 00 ac ad ae af
Only the nine bytes of the transfer change.
The left run flips one switch of the same bench. The checker catches this bug because the strobes are on the wire; the data bug of P2.7 was invisible to it.
Unaligned reads: which bytes are yours
RDATA is always the full bus word. In beat 0 of a read from 0x1003 only lane 3 belongs to the transfer. Lanes 0 to 2 carry whatever the subordinate drives, here the neighbours a2 a1 a0; the specification recommends zeros. A manager that keeps all four bytes of beat 0 has read three bytes it never asked for.
lanes: the lanes of the transfer, computed from the request. The chip shows the whole word on the wires.
- Cycle 0
The read request: 0x1003, three 4-byte transfers.
- Cycle 3
Beat 0 arrives as 11a2a1a0. Only lane 3, the byte 11, is part of the transfer; a2 a1 a0 are the neighbours at 0x1000 to 0x1002 that the memory happens to drive.
- Cycle 4
Beat 1 is a full word, 55443322, for 0x1004 to 0x1007.
- Cycle 5
Beat 2 is the last: 00887766 for 0x1008 to 0x100b. The manager keeps 1 + 4 + 4 bytes.
Measured: the bench collects rd = 11, 55443322, 887766 by shifting each beat down by its lower lane.
Wider bus, same procedure
On a 64-bit bus the same start address gives a different first beat. With 8-byte transfers from 0x1003, beat 0 covers 0x1003 to 0x1007: five bytes in lanes 3 to 7. Beats 1 and 2 are full 8-byte rows at 0x1008 and 0x1010. The burst moves 21 bytes and ends at 0x1017.
| Beat | Address | Lanes | Strobe | Bytes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0x1003 | 3 to 7 | 11111000 | 5 |
| 1 | 0x1008 | 0 to 7 | 11111111 | 8 |
| 2 | 0x1010 | 0 to 7 | 11111111 | 8 |
Three 8-byte beats from 0x1003 on a 64-bit bus, measured with the bench at dataW 64: the memory reads 80 81 82 cc bb aa 00 00 at 0x1000 afterwards.
The procedure never changes with the bus width. Here it is in full.
Bytes per transfer
number_bytes = 2 to the power AxSIZE. It must not exceed the bus width.
The aligned start
aligned = the start address rounded down to a multiple of number_bytes.
The address of beat n
The start address for beat 0; aligned + n × number_bytes for later beats of an INCR burst (WRAP returns to its boundary, P2.6; FIXED repeats the start).
The lower lane
lower = address of the beat modulo bus_bytes, where bus_bytes is the bus width in bytes.
The upper lane
For beat 0 and for every beat of a FIXED burst: aligned + number_bytes − 1 − word, where word is the beat address rounded down to bus_bytes. For every other beat: lower + number_bytes − 1.
Strobes and bytes
Strobe every lane from lower to upper and no other. The byte in lane l lands at word + l. On a read, only those lanes are part of the beat.
What the burst covers
From the start address to the end of the window, aligned + (AxLEN + 1) × number_bytes − 1. That is fewer bytes than (AxLEN + 1) × number_bytes whenever the start is unaligned.
The bench's beat_table is this procedure as code; the memory, the tasks and the checker call the same functions.
In the field
Packet headers, string copies and DMA descriptors start wherever software put them, so unaligned bursts are everyday traffic.
Asked in interviews: unaligned transfers
May an AXI burst start at an unaligned address?
Yes, for INCR and FIXED bursts. A WRAP burst must start aligned to its transfer size. The first beat covers the bytes from the start address to the end of its aligned transfer.
How many bytes does the first beat carry?
aligned + number_bytes − start. At 0x1003 with 4-byte transfers that is one byte; with 8-byte transfers on a 64-bit bus it is five.
Are the later beats unaligned too?
No. Every beat after the first starts at an aligned address and is full. Only beat 0 is partial.
Does a burst from 0x1003 with three 4-byte beats move twelve bytes?
No, nine: one, four and four. The burst ends at the end of its window, 0x100b. Twelve bytes from 0x1003 need four beats.
On an unaligned read, what is in the other lanes of beat 0?
Whatever the subordinate drives; zeros are recommended, neighbours are common. They are not part of the transfer and a manager must discard them.
Can the manager give an aligned address instead?
Yes: an aligned address with strobes that mark the real first byte is the same transfer. The low address bits and the strobes must agree, and the subordinate follows the strobes.
Try it
The table announces one byte, then four, then four, and the beat log delivers it: beat 0 carries 11 in bits 24 to 31 with a single strobe. The dump shows a0 a1 a2 untouched and the burst ending at 0x100b, where the top byte of the last beat, 00, landed.
Change the start to 0x1001 and beat 0 carries three bytes; to 0x1002 and it carries two. Change the burst type to WRAP and the checker names wrap, because a wrapping burst must start aligned. Set strb_force = 1; strb_val = 8'b1111; before the write to reproduce the opening failure.

Remember
- An INCR burst may start at any byte address. Beat 0 covers the start address to the end of its aligned transfer; every later beat is aligned and full.
- The burst covers the window from the aligned start, so it moves fewer bytes than (AxLEN + 1) × AxSIZE. Twelve bytes from 0x1003 need four beats.
- Strobes on beat 0 mark only the lanes from the start address. A full strobe on a partial beat overwrites the bytes before the start, and the checker names it.
- RDATA is always a full word. On an unaligned read, only the lanes of the transfer are yours; the rest is whatever the subordinate drives.
- One procedure maps any transfer: bytes per transfer, aligned start, the address of beat n, lower and upper lane, strobes, the window.
